Nell'estetica musicale romantica domina una metafora: quella dell'innesto. Si tratta precisamente di seguire da vicino tutti gli strumenti che la musica offre per cogliere il luogo preciso in cui lo spirito si innesta, si inscrive nella materia. E' questo un tema che arriva indisturbato fino alle più rigorose formulazioni della filosofia idealistica e che ci consente di avvicinare la sensibilità romantica liberandoci dei luoghi comuni che la hanno tanto mortificata riducendola a esercizio mistico e a ossessiva ricerca dell'assoluto. Si scoprirà, osservando con attenzione il modo in cui lo spirito romantico analizza le caratteristiche fisiche del suono e le fa dialogare con le spinte dell'interiorità e dell'immaginazione, una straordinaria capacità di erotizzazione della fisica sonora. "Il mio Diletto spinse/la sua mano attraverso il forame/e il mio interno fremette per lui" (Cantico dei cantici, 5,4). Alla stregua della relazione amorosa nel Cantico dei cantici, il suono descritto dai romantici come vibrazione che facilmente si converte in fremito, tremito interiore, ha a che fare con il tema dell'incarnazione. Come l'erotismo diffuso del Cantico, inteso quale intimo fremito dei corpi toccati dallo spirito, non ha impedito che esso prendesse il suo posto nella Bibbia, in un modo simile la sensibilità erotica dell'esperienza sonora si camuffa dietro la fisica del suono, trovando il suo cardine nel concetto di vibrazione. La posta in gioco è la seguente: il suono è la materia più spirituale perché facilmente il discorso sulla vibrazione può convertirsi in quello sul tremore e sul fremito dell'interiorità.

Tra sensi e spirito indaga le origini di una sorta di 'rivoluzione copernicana' vissuta nella cultura occidentale quando la musica conquista un primato indiscusso sulle altre arti, divenendo il medium privilegiato della conoscenza metafisica, se non addirittura l'emblema stesso della Verità assoluta. A partire dall'analisi delle principali opposizioni (tra melodia e armonia, parola e suono, voce e strumenti) che emergono dal dibattito estetico sviluppatosi nel secondo '700 prima in Francia e poi in Germania, Tra sensi e spirito mette in luce l'ambivalenza di fondo della musica, nella quale si riscontra una doppia natura: sensuale-erotica e mistico-spirituale. Esaminando questi due aspetti, che trovano una rappresentazione esemplare nelle opere di Heinse e Wackenroder e nei personaggi da loro creati, il volume fa emergere la figura dell''artista problematico' in senso moderno, che vive con profondo disagio l'ambiguità, la "delittuosa innocenza{OCLCbr#BB} del fenomeno musicale; un fenomeno musicale che agisce contemporaneamente come forza redentrice e 'narcotico', facendo perdere contatto con la realtà.
