Composed in the 4th century BC by an unknown author of Athenian origin, it is more than a spiritless report of cities and peoples. When analysed jointly on philological, historical and historiographical ground, it also reveals further levels of reading. Thus we discover a text that is a mirror of the historical and cultural tensions that agitate the Athenian society of the time: the unceasing struggle for an empire, the new relations with Philip II’s Macedonia and the other actors of Greek history, the growing development of geographical science and written culture, a biased perception of foreign peoples or remote and almost fabulous places.

Il Περὶ ἑπτὰ θεαμάτων è l’unico trattato sulle sette meraviglie che ci sia giunto dall’antichità. Il solo testimone che ne tramanda il testo – il Pal. Gr. 398, celebre testimone appartenente alla cosiddetta "collezione filosofica" – lo attribuisce all’ingenere ellenistico Filone di Bisanzio, attivo fra la metà e la fine del III sec. a.C. Tale attribuzione ha accresciuto, fin dal XVII sec., fama e autorità del trattatello. Tutto indica, tuttavia, che l’autore debba essere considerato tardo-antico, se non addirittura proto-bizantino. Questo volume offre la prima edizione critica del Περὶ ἑπτὰ θεαμάτων, corredata di traduzione, e preceduta da un’ampia introduzione che esplora la tradizione letteraria di cui l’autore si è nutrito, nonché le sorti testuali, il genere, la lingua e lo stile del trattatello, per arrivare a un’ipotesi di datazione. A ciascuna delle meraviglie descritte dall’autore sono inoltre dedicati approfondimenti di carattere storico e letterario, utili a far emergere le peculiarità della prospettiva adottata dallo Pseudo-Filone, e – in alcuni casi – a individuarne le probabili o sicure fonti. A corredo e giustificazione del testo è offerta una discussione dei passi più problematici sotto il profilo esegetico e critico-testuale. Conclude il volume la traduzione latina, sinora inedita, di Lukas Holste (1596-1661).

In Creating the Mediterranean: Maps and the Islamic Imagination Tarek Kahlaoui treats the subject of the Islamic visual representations of the Mediterranean. It tracks the history of the Islamic visualization of the sea from when geography was created by the Islamic state’s bureaucrats of the tenth century C.E. located mainly in the central Islamic lands, to the later men of the field, specifically the sea captains from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries C.E. located in the western Islamic lands. A narrative has emerged from this investigation in which the metamorphosis of the identity of the author or mapmaker seemed to be changing with the rest of the elements that constitute the identity of a map: its reader or viewer, its style and structure, and its textual content.
