Nel 1906 esce in Francia la traduzione proustiana di "Sesame and Lilies" [Sesamo e gigli] di John Ruskin, accompagnata da una prefazione – "Sur la lecture" [Sulla lettura] – nella quale Proust, prendendo le distanze dalle teorie del critico inglese, in una sapiente alternanza di parti narrative e parti saggistiche, rende presente la sua idea di lettura, offrendoci un primo assaggio di quel peculiare stile di scrittura che troverà la sua massima espressione nella "Recherche". Immergendoci nell’atmosfera incantata delle letture d’infanzia, Proust ci fa partecipi della sua poetica che vede nel libro l’innesco di un percorso creativo individuale, un principio di autonomia nella vita spirituale del singolo. Al contempo, il ricordo dei momenti felici trascorsi in compagnia di un libro amato fa riaffiorare come un magico filo dipanato a ritroso luoghi, persone, oggetti, situazioni sepolti nelle profondità cristalline della memoria, che i lettori della "Recherche" non tarderanno a riconoscere. Queste pagine, tra le più affascinanti che siano state dedicate all’attività di leggere, rappresentano il felice punto d’incontro tra l’approccio alla lettura di un grande scrittore e le sensazioni che, in quanto lettori, conosciamo bene: l’impressione trasognata, quasi irreale, con cui si emerge dal viaggio sul posto compiuto attraverso le parole di un libro. Le presentiamo al lettore italiano insieme a un articolo, "Journées de lecture"[Giornate di lettura], pubblicato il 20 marzo del 1907 su “Le Figaro”, dove, a dispetto del titolo, è un altro il magico oggetto in grado di evocare presenze e atmosfere assenti: il telefono, dispositivo all’epoca ancora estremamente raro e d’élite. È un piccolo esempio di scrittura mondana e d’occasione, un divertissement nel quale, tuttavia, traluce la capacità affabulatoria, ironica e ammaliante del primo Proust.

Non è possibile insegnare "il piacere" per la lettura; è tuttavia possibile motivare i ragazzi alla lettura. I didatti della lettura insistono notevolmente sui principi di libertà del lettore, pensiamo in particolare al decalogo dei diritti del lettore contenuto in Comme un roman di Daniel Pennac (1992). Spesso, però, i diritti del lettore non sono rispettati nella scuola, dove i ragazzi vengono obbligati a leggere e a produrre delle schede di lettura nelle quali, dopo aver letto il libro, devono scrivere riassunti, presentare personaggi, redigere commenti; esercizio interessante ma che rende pesante, per alcuni allievi, la lettura. Questo contributo presenta un quasi esperimento realizzato con la 4E della Scuola Media 1 di Bellinzona durante l'anno scolastico 2012-13. È stato possibile progettare un itinerario didattico che promuovesse la lettura attraverso un approccio fondato sull'oralità e sugli aspetti ludici. Il confronto con la classe di controllo ha permesso di comprendere che un approccio di questo tipo non fa aumentare il numero di libri letti, ma modifica l'opinione che i ragazzi hanno della lettura.
