Dal non impegnarsi oltre lo stretto necessario, all’acquisizione di know how senza nuove assunzioni, dal silenzio ostinato di fronte a situazioni critiche per evitare qualsiasi forma di conflitto sano al quiet firing, una sorta di abbandono psicologico anche da parte dei capi del proprio engagement, sono forme con cui il mondo del lavoro, dopo la breve epoca delle grandi dimissioni, si sta confrontando. I media hanno largamente trattato alcuni aspetti più superficiali di queste nuove linee di sviluppo, ma ancora non ne sono state indagate le cause più profonde. Le imprese non hanno ancora compreso pienamente gli elementi strutturali e il cambio di mindset alla base di queste nuove tendenze. Il populismo è un fenomeno che divide e impone di schierarsi. Come altre categorie politiche, è controversa e polemica: se ne servono leader e partiti centristi per accusare idee e movimenti di destra come di sinistra, facendo dell’opposizione al populismo la bandiera per accreditarsi come moderati presso gli elettori. Il problema è che il populismo vanifica ogni pretesa di moderazione, radicalizza la sfera politica rendendo tutti populisti, se non altro nella propaganda e nello stile del discorso, opposizionale e intollerante. Al cuore del populismo vi è infatti un rifiuto del pluralismo: ciò in base a cui i populisti intendono governare è la pretesa di una rappresentanza morale esclusiva di quello che essi considerano «il popolo vero». E se la discussione «sul» populismo rischia di diventare una discussione «pro» o «contro» di esso, il libro di Müller ha il merito di aver contribuito a rendere la categoria del populismo meno aleatoria. Diventato un classico tra gli studi contemporanei e qui riproposto con una nuova Prefazione dell’Autore e un nuovo saggio di Nadia Urbinati, il libro ci mostra come il populismo sia anche e prima di tutto una strategia di potere e ci invita a pensare alla politica democratica non solo come competizione per conquistare la maggioranza ma anche come dialettica politica tra posizioni diverse. Perché la vera questione, oggi, è in quale relazione il populismo si trovi rispetto alla democrazia, della cui linfa si nutre senza tuttavia nutrirla a sua volta.

È difficile trovare nel dibattito pubblico degli ultimi anni una questione più divisiva dell’accoglienza delle persone in cerca di asilo. Il tema compatta la destra su posizioni sempre più rigide di chiusura e scompagina il fronte di sinistra tra distinguo e sfumature. Intanto, la questione resta mal compresa e trattata in modo approssimativo, per non dire grossolano. In tal senso, questo libro si pone l’obiettivo di fare chiarezza, dati alla mano, distinguendo con precisione, per esempio, tra rifugiati, richiedenti asilo, immigrati, profughi – spesso definiti genericamente migranti – e illustrando chi realmente li accoglie. Affronta da un lato le politiche adottate nei loro confronti (contenimento, gestione, stentata accoglienza), approfondendo il tema cruciale dell’integrazione, in particolare nel sistema italiano; dall’altro, analizza le risposte di solidarietà verso i rifugiati provenienti dalla società civile e dal mondo del volontariato e delle ONG. Infine, tenta di delineare possibili soluzioni: il ritorno in patria dei rifugiati, la loro integrazione nel primo luogo di arrivo, il reinsediamento in un paese terzo, l’intervento delle sponsorizzazioni private e dei corridoi umanitari.

America will remain the world’s only superpower for the foreseeable future. But what sort of superpower? What role should America play in the world? What role do you want America to play?
