Il senso religioso è il primo volume del PerCorso, nel quale don Giussani riassume il suo itinerario di pensiero e di esperienza. Una scoperta che esalta la ragione come capacità di rendersi conto della realtà secondo la totalità dei suoi fattori. Nell'ultimo capitolo del libro don Giussani introduce l'ipotesi della rivelazione, che cioè il Mistero ignoto prenda l'iniziativa e si faccia conoscere incontrando l'uomo. Il cristianesimo ha a che fare con il senso religioso proprio perché si propone come risposta imprevedibile, eppure pienamente ragionevole, al desiderio dell'uomo di vivere scoprendo e amando il proprio destino.

Mai come in questo libro, che raduna i celebri corsi dai quali prese avvio – subito dopo la fine della prima guerra mondiale – una fulminante carriera di docente, Heidegger ha trattato con ampiezza e profondità, passione e coinvolgimento, il fenomeno della religione. E c’è un motivo. A questi corsi, infatti, egli si dedicò nel pieno di una crisi religiosa che lo portò ad abbandonare il «sistema del cattolicesimo» e che conferisce ai suoi lavori di questo periodo quella tensione che accompagna le grandi svolte. Si tratta dell’«Introduzione alla fenomenologia della religione» (1920/21), del corso su «Agostino e il neoplatonismo» (1921) e di quello su «I fondamenti filosofici della mistica medioevale» (annunciato per il 1919/20 ma non svolto), cui si aggiunge la recensione al volume di Rudolf Otto, «Il sacro». Senza rinunciare al proprio punto di vista squisitamente filosofico, e professandosi «ateo in linea di principio», Heidegger interpreta l’esperienza religiosa come matrice esemplare per capire la dinamica originaria della vita umana nella sua «fatticità», quindi nella sua «gettatezza», finitudine e storicità. In particolare egli si accosta ai documenti del primo cristianesimo, e soprattutto alle lettere dell’apostolo Paolo e alle «Confessioni» di Agostino, per assimilarne con avidità le intuizioni filosofiche e delineare sulla loro scorta i tratti genuini della vita umana nella sua fatale tendenza alla perdizione e allo scacco – ma anche nella sua ricerca di un arduo eppur raggiungibile riscatto.
