Il libro di Giona è tra i testi più brevi della Bibbia. Eppure, è uno dei più conosciuti e sorprendenti, tanto da sembrare una “favola”: la storia appare così semplice che persino i bambini l’ascoltano a bocca aperta. Duemilacinquecento anni dopo la sua redazione, questo libro parla ancora, impassibile all’usura del tempo e accessibile a tutti, al punto che la Parola si palesa in modo assolutamente naturale: inalterabile, nuova come il primo giorno in cui fu scritta, la forza del suo fascino sull’anima del lettore è ancora intatta. Dal canto suo Gesù, rifiutandosi di dare ai Farisei il segno preteso, dichiarò a quanti lo ascoltavano che avrebbe dato loro invece il «segno di Giona». Questo testo così originale, se riletto alla luce del mistero di Cristo, offre una vivida luce e si fa rivelazione. Chi ha una certa dimestichezza con i Vangeli, sa bene che a Gesù piaceva parlare in parabole. Le sue sono parabole gustose condite di umorismo e, talora, perfino di ironia. Giona è una parabola di questo tipo. David-Marc d’Hamonville ci conduce alla scoperta di uno dei profeti apparentemente più irrilevanti e ambigui della Bibbia. Una figura con la quale, però, il Salvatore trovò un punto di contatto, e con cui finì in qualche modo per identificarsi.
