Active Social Policies In The Eu written by van Berkel, Rik and has been published by Policy Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2002-09-27 with Education categories.

This book challenges the underlying presupposition that regular employment is the royal road to inclusion. Drawing on original empirical research, it investigates the inclusionary and exclusionary potentials of different types of work, including activation programmes. Active social policies in the EU makes an important contribution to the debates in this area by: reporting on original international comparative research; reflecting on and critically assessing current activating policies; evaluating the consequences of these policies, as well as challenging the premises they are based on; including the perspectives of service users in its analyses; offering recommendations for the future design of activating policies. The book will be invaluable for students, lecturers and researchers of social and labour market policies and policy makers. It is essential reading for those interested in issues of inclusion, activation and the role of types of work in promoting inclusion.

Today Europe finds itself in a crisis that casts a dark shadow over an entire generation. The seriousness of the crisis stems from one core political contradiction at the heart of the European project: namely, that what urgently needs to be done is also extremely unpopular and therefore virtually impossible to do democratically. What must be done - and almost everyone agrees in principle on the measures that would be needed to deal with the financial crisis - cannot be sold to the voting public of the core member states, which so far have been less affected by the crisis than those on the periphery, nor can the conditions that core members try to impose be easily sold to voters in the deficit countries. The European Union is therefore becoming increasingly disunited, with deepening divides between the German-dominated ‘core’ and the southern ‘periphery’, between the winners and the losers of the common currency, between the advocates of greater integration and the anti-Europeans, between the technocrats and the populists. Europe finds itself trapped by the deepening divisions that are opening up across the Continent, obstructing its ability to deal with a crisis that has already caused massive social suffering in the countries of the European periphery and is threatening to derail the very project of the European Union. In this short book, Claus Offe brings into sharp focus the central political problem that lies at the heart of the EU and shackles its ability to deal with the most serious crisis of its short history.

Telling Stories by Tim Burgess of The Charlatans is one of the decade's most revealing rock books 'Clear, honest. An unusually frank and well-written rock memoir' The Times The Charlatans. Madchester. Britpop. Taking on the world. Here are the highs, the lows, the joys, the agonies, and the stories of what it's like to be in a rock band, as told by front man and survivor, Tim Burgess. 'Like the best bits of every cautionary rock star tale . . . there is armed robbery and smuggling. There's serious fraud. There are near and actual death experiences, divorce, industrial cocaine consumption and magnificent cameos from Madonna, Alan McGee, Ronnie Wood, Joe Strummer, LA drug dealer Harry The Dog, and Joaquin Phoenix. A minor classic' Q For readers who enjoyed Life by Keith Richards and Bit of a Blur by Alex James, Telling Stories is one of the finest music books of recent times. It's a story of achievement and survival, from London to LA. 'A vivid read' Independent on Sunday 'The Charlatans' frontman recalls the heyday of Britpop and Madchester with endearing exuberance. He's unflinchingly honest about the bad times but also peppers his story with anecdotal nuggets about the pitfalls of rock 'n' roll excess' Metro 'Burgess keeps a level head, a sharp eye and a nice turn of phrase' Independent 'Written with the stylish flow of a novel - light and dark, hilarious and melancholic' Emma Forrest 'For a man whose behaviour borders on the suicidal, Timothy Burgess, the people's friend, is what you call a life enthusiast. He is also mad. It's a much-abused word, mad . . . but he really is proper coo-ee clouds pan-dimensional mad mad' Syliva Patteerson, Sky Tim Burgess was born in Salford but grew up in a village near Northwich, Cheshire. Kubrick S Cinema Odyssey written by Michel Chion and has been published by Bloomsbury Publishing PLC this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2001-06 with Performing Arts categories.

Critic and theorist of film sound, Michel Chion, offers some keys to understanding 2001. Setting the film first in its historical and cultural contexts (the Space Race, the Cold War, 60s psychedelia), Chion goes on to locate it within Kubrick's career. He then conducts an analysis of its structure and style, arguing that 2001 is an 'absolute film', a unique assemblage of cinema's elements, through which pulses a vision of human existence. In a supplementary chapter Chion argues that Kubrick's last film, Eyes Wide Shut (1999), is a return to 2001, a final statement of its concerns. And in a series of appendices Chion provides production details, an analytic synopsis, credits and a consideration of the legacy of 2001.

This early work by Otto Jespersen was originally published in 1925 and we are now republishing it with a brand new introductory biography. 'Mankind, Nation and Individual' is a work on the subject of linguistics that deals with slang, standard of correctness, mysticism, and much more. Otto Jespersen was born in Randers, Denmark on 16th July 1869. Jespersen taught at Copenhagen University and rose to the position of professor of English, a post he held from 1893 to 1925. Early in this period he produced work on language teaching reform and phonetics, but later became a prominent figure in the areas of syntax and lanuguage development. He went on to write several well received books, such as 'Language: Its Nature, Development and Origin' (1922), 'Modern English Grammar on Historical Principles' (1909-1949), and 'Growth and Structure of the English Language' (1905). He also pioneered the field of sociolinguistics.
