Sullo sfondo dei surreali paesaggi baltici – distese bigie e solitarie in cui esplodono improvvise macchie di colore –, paesaggi che trovano una perfetta rispondenza nel carattere degli eccentrici, poliglotti baroni locali e dei loro più eccentrici congiunti, si dipana la storia della famiglia Grabhau, segnata da un oscuro destino in cui l’esilio è come una variazione su un tema musicale, una condanna e al tempo stesso una necessità, una coazione a ripetere: dal capostipite Konrad all’ultimo barone Grabhau, Eduard, che il vento della storia porterà dalla Russia sino a Roma e poi, alla vigilia della Seconda guerra mondiale, agli Stati Uniti. La vicenda prende l’avvio agli inizi del XVIII secolo, quando il barone Andreas viene costretto dallo zar – che ha sconfitto il sovrano di Svezia a Poltava – a lasciare con i suoi cari il castello avito di Marienschloss. Andreas e la moglie Cristina, la figlia Marie-Dagmar e la governante Praskovia cercano di abituarsi alla loro nuova vita in Russia. Tredici anni dopo, la firma della pace tra lo zar e il sovrano di Svezia segna la fine dell’esilio e Marie-Dagmar, dando prova di un insospettabile pragmatismo, accetta di andare in sposa al ricco mercante Babiscin. Il testimone passa quindi nelle mani di Eduard Grabhau che va a vivere a Roma presso un lontano parente acquisito, il marchese Sgambati: attraversa come in punta di piedi quasi un quarto di secolo, impossibilitato a liberarsi dal senso di solitudine ed estraneità che la condizione di apolide ed esiliato porta inevitabilmente con sé.Gli anni passano e dopo il quarto esilio, quello che lo ha visto partire per gli Stati Uniti insieme alla figlia, Eduard assiste da lontano – con un distacco che non è freddezza ma una sorta, ormai, di seconda pelle – all’ultimo esilio della famiglia Grabhau proprio nella persona della figlia Sophie che, arrestata per la sua attività politica sovversiva, sceglie di rimanere in carcere pur avendo la possibilità di essere rilasciata sulla parola perché rinnegare le proprie idee vorrebbe dire rinnegare anche il passato e il passato è l’unica garanzia della sua identità..
