We learn more every year about the damaging effects of solitary confinement. This unquestionably cruel and unusual punishment leaves prisoners with no human contact, sometimes for years at a time, and it nearly always leads to lasting trauma. In Solitary, Maurizio Torchio takes on the daunting task of narrating this most isolating experience, one in which the captive is not only cut off from society in the walls of a prison, but from human contact itself. Within this closed world seemingly out of time, the prisoner still yearns for human contact. Ultimately, this desire is a form of hope, reminding us that ineluctable human qualities survive even in the most inhumane spaces.

The Heritage Of Our Times written by Ernst Bloch and has been published by John Wiley & Sons this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-10-07 with Social Science categories.

Heritage of Our Times is a brilliant examination of modern culture and its legacy by one of the most important and deeply influential thinkers of the 20th century. Bloch argues that the key elements of a genuine cultural tradition are not just to be found in the conveniently closed and neatly labeled ages of the past, but also in the open and experimental cultural process of our time. One of the most compelling aspects of this work is a contemporary analysis of the rise of Nazism. It probes its bogus roots in German history and mythology at the very moment when the ideologies of Blood and Soil and the Blond Beast were actually taking hold of the German people. The breadth and depth of Bloch's vision, together with the rich diversity of his interest, ensure this work a place as one of the key books of the 20th century.

Archestratos of Gela was the author of a mock-epic poem, most likely entitled the Hedupatheia or Life of Luxury, that presented itself as a gastronomic tour of the Mediterranean world. Written sometime in the first two-thirds of the fourth century BCE, the Hedupatheia was widely read in thelate classical and early Hellenistic periods and was translated into Latin by Ennius, through whom it influenced the work of later Roman poets including Horace. It survives today in fragments totalling about 330 lines. The Hedupatheia is a fundamental source for our understanding not only offourth-century literature but also of the significance of food and dining and the reception of epic poetry in late classical society. This edition is based on a fresh examination of the manuscripts and is the first to combine an authoritative critical text of the fragments with a translation, adetailed philological and historical commentary, and an extensive introduction situating the poem in its literary, social, and cultural context.

Folk Soul written by Luca Turchet and has been published by Luca Turchet this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2013-10-21 with Travel categories.

This is a book which talks about men’s souls. A special type of soul, a “folk” soul. Through the careful and curious eyes of a tireless traveller, encounters, anecdotes, and fortuitous coincidences present the European folk world in all its beauty and authenticity. A world made of music and musicians, dances and dancers, instruments and luthiers, festivals and enjoyment. But also of a heritage of culture and values which the centennial wisdom of the traditions has entrusted to a modern man ever more separated from the community, from nature, and from himself. In the age of internet, of technological progress, and of globalization, talking about traditions, proverbs, dialects, ancient instruments and popular dances might seem anachronistic. However, the messages within these pages will cause you to reflect on how these timeworn practices are alive and how they can lead man towards a path of enlightenment.
