L’affermazione che apre questo innovativo e provocatorio saggio è di quelle ardite: l’età moderna è l’età degli ebrei e, in particolare, il XX secolo è stato il secolo ebraico per eccellenza. Una tale affermazione presuppone naturalmente che tra l’essere ebreo e lo spirito della modernità vi sia una profonda affinità, se non una sostanziale identità. Ma che cosa significa essere ebrei? Facendo propria una divisione antropologica del mondo in «apollinei» e «mercuriani », vale a dire in contadini e mercanti, in stanziali e nomadi, in locali e stranieri, l’autore di queste pagine offre una risposta inequivocabile: gli ebrei sono i piú grandi «mercuriani» della Storia. Un popolo senza patria, dedito alle lucrose attività del terziario, colto, eccentrico per aspetto, lingua, religione, tradizioni. E oggetto dell’odio e dell’invidia degli «apollinei » circostanti. Alla luce di tali categorie, la stessa storia dell’umanità si rivela come la storia di una progressiva «mercurianizzazione» dell’uomo. E l’età moderna come quel punto di svolta in cui l’uomo diventa universalmente mobile, professionalmente duttile, erudito, ricco per prestigio acquisito e non per natali; diventa, insomma, ebreo. Cruciali, come emblema stesso della modernizzazione, appaiono soprattutto gli ultimi cento anni di storia ebraica e l’esito delle tre grandi migrazioni: verso l’America, verso il nuovo Stato di Israele, verso Mosca e le altre grandi città dell’Unione Sovietica. Nel ventennio successivo alla rivoluzione bolscevica del 1917, questa terza diaspora si rivela come quella di maggior successo. In tutta la prima metà del XX secolo, gli ebrei, ancor piú che negli Stati Uniti, prosperarono in URSS, grazie alla promessa di una società nuova che osava combattere il nazionalismo, il capitalismo e l’antisemitismo che di lí a poco avrebbe partorito l’orrore nazista. Per una delle tragiche ironie della Storia, questa promessa si rivelò una crudele chimera. E, all’alba del XXI secolo, di terre promesse per il popolo ebraico non ne sono restate che due: Israele con tutti i pericoli e la precarietà della sua esistenza, e l’America, il paese moderno, competitivo e volto al successo economico. E dunque ebraico piú che mai. La maggioranza degli ebrei vive oggi in una società «mercuriana» per eccellenza sia per fede ufficiale sia – sempre piú – per appartenenza, una società in cui non vi sono nativi riconosciuti, una società di «nomadi terziari». Con questo volume dedicato al teatro ebraico dalle origini al 1948 si viene a colmare una grave lacuna della pubblicistica non solo italiana. Secondo un luogo comune assai diffuso, l’antropologia e la cultura ebraiche sarebbero caratterizzate da un interdetto assoluto nei confronti del teatro. Qui si dimostra ampiamente che un’attenzione nei confronti del teatro – o per meglio dire dell’espressione performativa – tanto intensa quanto peculiare abbia caratterizzato tutta la storia dell’ebraismo. Dall’episodio biblico di Ester alle rappresentazioni carnevalesche del Purim e poi, a partire dalla metà dell’Ottocento, al teatro yiddish, la cultura ebraica è stata costantemente in dialogo con le varie forme della teatralità, sia adattando ai propri scopi modelli delle culture nazionali sia elaborandone di propri.L’excursus di questo volume si ferma all’altezza del 1948, spartiacque di una storia diversa, quella del nuovo Stato d’Israele, uno dei più importanti “esperimenti di modernità” del XX e XXI secolo. Verso la fine di questa prima parte il teatro ebraico incrocia il proprio destino con quello del teatro yiddish. Qui si dà il caso singolare di una civiltà che si è espressa, al momento dell’ingresso nella modernità, in due sistemi teatrali molto differenti, a partire dalla lingua, e spesso in contrasto tra loro. Ed è proprio in questo momento che – nell’intreccio tra impresa sionista, recupero dell’antica lingua e costruzione identitaria dell’Ebreo Nuovo – prende vita il teatro nazionale di Israele.

This masterwork of interpretative history begins with a bold declaration: The Modern Age is the Jewish Age--and we are all, to varying degrees, Jews. The assertion is, of course, metaphorical. But it underscores Yuri Slezkine's provocative thesis. Not only have Jews adapted better than many other groups to living in the modern world, they have become the premiere symbol and standard of modern life everywhere. Slezkine argues that the Jews were, in effect, among the world's first free agents. They traditionally belonged to a social and anthropological category known as "service nomads," an outsider group specializing in the delivery of goods and services. Their role, Slezkine argues, was part of a broader division of human labor between what he calls Mercurians-entrepreneurial minorities--and Apollonians--food-producing majorities. Since the dawning of the Modern Age, Mercurians have taken center stage. In fact, Slezkine argues, modernity is all about Apollonians becoming Mercurians--urban, mobile, literate, articulate, intellectually intricate, physically fastidious, and occupationally flexible. Since no group has been more adept at Mercurianism than the Jews, he contends, these exemplary ancients are now model moderns. The book concentrates on the drama of the Russian Jews, including émigrés and their offspring in America, Palestine, and the Soviet Union. But Slezkine has as much to say about the many faces of modernity--nationalism, socialism, capitalism, and liberalism--as he does about Jewry. Marxism and Freudianism, for example, sprang largely from the Jewish predicament, Slezkine notes, and both Soviet Bolshevism and American liberalism were affected in fundamental ways by the Jewish exodus from the Pale of Settlement. Rich in its insight, sweeping in its chronology, and fearless in its analysis, this sure-to-be-controversial work is an important contribution not only to Jewish and Russian history but to the history of Europe and America as well.
