Nell’autobus viveun uomo dalla carne debordante, appassionato di scacchi e pasticcere provetto, che al bambinodecide di trasmettere tutto il suo sapere: aperture, strategie, arrocchi e attacchi doppi. Ma soprattutto gli insegna a tracciare, mossa dopo mossa, magnifici disegni sulla scacchiera. Il posto del bambino però non è di fronte all’avversario: è sotto la scacchiera, da dove muove i pezzi senza vederli, solo ascoltandone il suono.Alla morte dell’uomo – sempre più grasso, e impossibilitato a scendere dall’autobus –, il bambino passa sotto la scacchiera intere giornate, finché non viene invitato a unirsi a un club prestigioso quanto segreto, il Circolo di scacchi sul fondo del mare, dove smettere di diventare grandi è doloroso come piegare il proprio corpo per entrare in un automa e muovere i pezzi attraverso i suoi arti meccanici. D’ora in poi lo chiameranno Little Alechin, dal nome del «poeta della scacchiera».Inno alla fanciullezza e all’innocenza, Nuotare con un elefante tenendo in braccio un gatto rivela ancora una volta l’immaginazione di Yoko Ogawa, qui declinata nelle tonalità soffuse di una favola, e la sua capacità di intessere trame di sogno – o, più spesso, di incubo – sull’ordito di una realtà contemporanea altrimenti fosca, indefinita: aloni morbidi di colore, verde, blu, bianco, illuminano così le profondità subacquee dell’adolescenza, con il loro non detto, il loro rimosso, i loro porti sepolti di segreti. Tornare alla luce significa morire, e forse un po’ vivere.

The pun is as old as Babel, and inveterate punsters like Shakespeare clearly never lacked translators. This book critically examines the evergreen cliché that wordplay defies translation, replacing it by a theory and a case study that aim to come to grips with the reality of wordplay and its translation. What are the possible modes of wordplay translation? What are the various, sometimes conflicting constraints prompting translators in certain situations to go for one strategy rather than another? Ample illustration is provided from Hamlet and other Shakespearean texts and several Dutch, French, and German renderings. The study exemplifies how theory can usefully be integrated into a description-oriented approach to translation. Much of the argument also rests on the definition of wordplay as an open-ended and historically variable category. The book's concerns range from the linguistic and textual properties of Shakespeare's punning and its translation to matters of historical poetics and ideology. Its straightforward approach shows that discourse about wordplay doesn't need to rely on stylistic bravura or abstract speculation. The book is concluded by an anthology of the puns in Hamlet, including a brief semantic analysis of each and a generous selection of diverse translations.
