Marco Gaviani, classe 1967, arruolato dall’età di 14 anni quale correttore di bozze per i libri di suo padre, ha sempre amato molto la letteratura, la musica e naturalmente scrivere. Ha mosso i primi passi come autore di brani musicali per cantanti in erba e per due band, dove ha militato anche come batterista, realizzando alcuni album tra il 1995 e il 2015. Nel 1998 ha partecipato alla stesura dell’ultimo libro di suo padre, Un contadino in pace e in guerra, con prefazione di Norberto Bobbio, dove si narra la vita di un soldato della Seconda guerra mondiale. Nel 2015 ha pubblicato con un amico una raccolta di poesie dal titolo Una favola di Musica. Ha partecipato con alcuni suoi racconti a vari concorsi, piazzandosi tra i primi posti. Sherlock Holmes e il cammino del poeta è il suo primo romanzo.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti nasce nel 1919 a Yonkers, New York, da padre italiano e madre di origini franco-portoghesi. È poeta, romanziere, traduttore, editore, pittore, autore di teatro e drammi radiofonici. Anima della San Francisco Renaissance, che negli anni 50 stravolge le convenzioni letterarie e sociali del tempo, Ferlinghetti è da allora protagonista di una intensa attività creativa, mai disgiunta da una profonda attenzione a tematiche politiche, sociali ed ecologiche. Fondatore assieme a Pete D. Martin della famosa City Lights Bookstore, Ferlinghetti ha sempre compiuto scelte editoriali coraggiose, come la pubblicazione di “Urlo” di Allen Ginsberg, vero manifesto della beat generation, per la quale viene accusato di vendita e distribuzione di materiale osceno: il noto processo del 1956 termina con una storica vittoria legale contro la censura. Negli anni ha partecipato a numerosi festival e reading di poesia, tra i quali quelli storici alla Royal Albert Hall di Londra (1965), a Castelporziano (1978), ad Amsterdam (1981), dimostrandosi viaggiatore instancabile e artista sempre attento alla difesa degli ultimi e del pianeta. Ha esposto le proprie opere pittoriche in diversi musei e gallerie sia negli Stati Uniti che in Europa. Insignito nel 1998 del titolo di primo Poeta Laureato della città di San Francisco, Ferlinghetti ha ricevuto svariati riconoscimenti, tra cui recentemente quello di Commendatore al merito della Repubblica Italiana. The poetics of epiphany have long been recognised as a broad aesthetic trend of modernism, related to the power of art to reveal the hidden essence of reality. Yet the critical use of the concept is still contested, complicated by the fact that in many modernist works exceptional moments are anything but revealing. This book embraces the blurred nature of epiphanies and sets out to explore their effects in a comparative journey paralleling Anglophone and Italian modernist short fiction. The work of four modernist short story writers – Luigi Pirandello, James Joyce, Federigo Tozzi, and Katherine Mansfield – illuminates epiphanies as complex phenomena, connected to multiple aspects of modernist culture, which appear in artistic experiences developed independently in the same decades. The ideas of Henri Bergson, William James, Martin Heidegger, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, among others, nuance our understanding of the stories and of the author's vision behind them. At least three threads emerge, as a result, as common characteristics of modernist epiphanies. First, they are a result of the ‘inward turn’ and of the curiosity about the psyche’s subconscious processes. Second, they attempt to rediscover lived experience as a source of partial but reliable knowledge. Third, they re-actualise mystical experiences as conduits to a secular insight about life. The main appeal of these modernist moments of enlightenment is precisely that they establish an atmosphere of ambiguity where multiple and sometimes irreconcilable potential meanings can be found. By so doing, they succeed in evoking the undifferentiated creative potential that, according to the widespread vitalist philosophies of the age, constitutes the essence of life. In reframing ambiguity and indeterminacy as spaces of creation and choice, epiphanies thus bring out a lesser known, life-affirming but not naïve vein of modernist inspiration.
