Risultato di una disputa con Giovan Battista della Porta, Del senso delle cose e della magia è una sintesi straordinaria dell’enciclopedia cinquecentesca dei saperi, nella quale la visione del mondo come un organismo vivente viene difesa intrecciando mirabilmente scienza e credenza, rigore argomentativo e forza retorica. Scritto in una prima versione in latino, sottratto e inviato in questa forma al Sant’Uffizio, è il testo che è costato le prime persecuzioni al suo autore. Ad esse Campanella controbatterà riscrivendo l’opera, per lui ormai perduta, in italiano. Antonio Bruers nel 1925 ne cura per i tipi della Laterza la prima pubblicazione moderna. Questa è un’edizione nuova del testo campanelliano curata da Germana Ernst, una delle maggiori esperte del pensiero del filosofo.

Questo libro propone una nuova chiave interpretativa per leggere, e superare, la contrapposizione tra idealismo e realismo. Al centro c’è il modo nel quale avviene la conoscenza umana, il rapporto tra l’io e il mondo, campo d’indagine della fenomenologia che non può, e non deve, rimanere chiuso all’interno dei confini della disciplina. Obiettivo della ricerca è allora anche confrontarsi con l’interesse per il realismo che caratterizza il dibattito contemporaneo, nell’intento di scardinarne gli automatismi e i pregiudizi. Angela Ales Bello rileva come alla base della controversia tra realismo e idealismo ci siano spesso equivoci di natura semantica e, risalendo alle origini della fenomenologia moderna, mette in discussione l’interpretazione del concetto husserliano di idealismo trascendentale. Lungo questa strada – disinnescando gli estremi di un idealismo acritico e di un realismo ingenuo – la filosofa giunge a proporre un “realismo trascendentale”, orizzonte di un’unità dinamica che abbraccia il processo conoscitivo e che fonda la correlazione, non la subordinazione, di soggetto e oggetto. L’indagine di questa reciprocità oltrepassa così i confini dell’ambito gnoseologico, e conduce alle domande fondamentali sul senso ultimo delle cose e sulla loro origine.

Even if specific pieces of research (on the sources or on individual authors, such as Pico, Agrippa, Erasmus, Montaigne, Sanches etc.) have given and are still producing significant results on Renaissance scepticism, an overall synthesis comprising the entire period has not been achieved yet. No predetermined idea of that complex historical subject that is Renaissance scepticism underlies this book, and we want to sacrifice the complexity of movements, personalities, tendencies and interpretations to any sort of a priori unity of theme even less. We acknowledge unhesitatingly that we had always thought of “scepticisms” in the plural, and believe that the different contexts (philosophical, religious, cultural) in which these forms grew up must also be taken into account. Furthermore, given the transversal nature and provocative character of the sceptical challenge, this book contains essays also on philosophers who, without being sceptics and sometimes engaged in fighting scepticism, nevertheless took up its challenge. The main authors considered in this book are: Vives, Castellio, Agrippa, Pedro de Valencia, Pico, Sanchez, Montaigne, Charron, Bruno, Bacon, and Campanella. The various essays in the book show the relevance of the philosophical thought of authors little known by the general public and put in new perspective important aspects of the thought of some of the great thinkers of the Renaissance.
