[Italiano]: In un momento così significativo per la storia europea e mondiale, questo volume vuole essere la raccolta di riflessioni scientifiche condotte sui rapporti tra le scelte politiche, le azioni militari e la fisionomia delle città e del paesaggio urbano, sull’evoluzione delle strutture e delle tecniche di difesa, sulla rappresentazione della guerra e dei suoi effetti sull’immagine urbana, sul recupero delle tracce della memoria cittadina. Da una parte il campo delle Digital Humanities apre nuove prospettive per studiare l'immagine della città prima, durante e dopo la guerra, dall’altro le tecnologie digitali impegnano studiosi e ricercatori di varie discipline: in particolare nell’ambito del disegno viene esplorato il ruolo della rappresentazione nella formulazione dei progetti urbani di difesa e nella documentazione degli eventi bellici e delle tracce lasciate dai conflitti, mentre nell’ambito del restauro vengono approfondite le sfide teoriche e pratiche imposte dai danni arrecati dai conflitti ai centri storici, passando in rassegna casi studio, soluzioni e dibattiti relativi alla conservazione del patrimonio urbano coinvolto in azioni di guerra, con un'attenzione particolare all'identità e alla memoria collettiva./[English]: At such a significant moment in European and world history, this volume aims to be a collection of scientific reflections about the relationships between political choices, military actions and the physiognomy of cities and the urban landscape, about the evolution of defence structures and techniques, about the representation of war and its effects on the urban image, and about the recovery of the traces of city memory. On the one hand the field of Digital Humanities opens up new perspectives to study the image of the city before, during and after the war, on the other hand digital technologies engage academics and researchers from various disciplines: In particular, in the area of drawing, the role of representation in the formulation of urban defence projects and in the documentation of wartime events and the traces left behind by conflicts is explored, while in the area of conservation, the theoretical and practical challenges imposed by the damage caused by conflicts to historic centres are explored, reviewing case studies, solutions and debates relating to the conservation of urban heritage involved in wartime actions, with a focus on identity and collective memory.

Se la fotografia ha subito nella sua storia diverse trasformazioni tecniche che ne hanno progressivamente facilitato e ampliato la pratica, quanto avvenuto recentemente con l'avvento del digitale non ha eguali per diffusione e consumo di immagini. Un processo che, a giudicarlo con i criteri dell'epoca analogica, va ben oltre la diffusione democratica della pratica fotografica e pare procedere verso una sorta di "trivializzazione" della immagine. Ma quanto è avvenuto nel campo fotografico va compreso all'interno dei più complessivi cambiamenti introdotti nella società dalla rivoluzione digitale che ha comportato un vero e proprio "salto di paradigma" nei rapporti fra l'individuo e la realtà. La necessità di stabilire, analogie, continuità e differenze fra presente e il passato, fornisce l'occasione di un discorso sulla fotografia intesa come attività creativa, testimonianza e memoria, come esercizio di riflessione sulla realtà e educazione allo sguardo consapevole sul mondo. Un discorso fatto per "frammenti", come la fotografia che è fatta di frammenti di spazio (l'inquadratura) e di tempo (l'attimo dello scatto) e come singole foto all'interno di una raccolta, in cui ognuna, pure compiuta in sé stessa, acquista maggior significato in relazione alle altre.

Qual è il nostro sguardo sulla guerra? In che modo i nuovi media hanno trasformato i conflitti e hanno mutato il nostro modo di guardare gli eventi bellici rispetto al XIX secolo? Che rapporto esiste tra la percezione (o la crescente anestesia) in relazione alla violenza bellica e i media che la mostrano (o la rimuovono)? Le guerre da sempre sono portatrici di violenza, sangue, morte; sono situazioni nelle quali prendono corpo di volta in volta modi concreti di intendere lo spazio politico, in cui si realizza uno specifico modo di vivere dell’uomo. A un secolo dallo scoppio della Prima guerra mondiale – la prima guerra fotografata in massa, in modo diffuso e dissonante –, a settant’anni dalla Liberazione e dalla chiusura dei campi di sterminio, questa raccolta di studi intende tornare a riflettere su alcuni momenti fondamentali di trasformazione della guerra all’interno della storia contemporanea, a partire dalle immagini cui tali eventi bellici sono connessi. Se le guerre sono i luoghi di esplosione della violenza pura, le immagini ci aiutano a capire se e come i paesaggi che hanno preso forma intorno al fuoco della guerra sono cambiati nel corso del tempo. Le immagini danno un volto alla guerra, indicano il senso (e l’assenza di senso) di un conflitto, in modo consapevole o meno sono prese di posizione politica nella storia.
