Era dentro un pomeriggio d’estate: nell’aria immobile di giorni brucianti, al confine fra un’epoca e l’altra – Moro era morto da poco, ma in breve l’Italia sarebbe tornata a far festa, la paura sarebbe stata dimenticata. Era fra le mani dei nostri padri, che solo molti anni più tardi avremmo capito; di padri che non avevano bisogno di parlare, né intendevano farlo. Ma non è forse vero che altrove si parlava comunque tantissimo? Si parlava nelle riunioni di partito, nelle aule e nelle palestre scolastiche, nei dibattiti pubblici. Ciascuno parlava per sé, naturalmente, ma anche per un’idea. Erano idee messe al servizio non di sé stessi, come individui, ma di un soggetto comune, di un “noi”, nel quale le individualità potevano e dovevano confluire. Da un certo momento in avanti ciascuno ha preso a parlare solo per sé, senza più pretendere né desiderare di parlare anche per altri; senza più aspirare alla condivisione delle parole, dentro un silenzio che le accogliesse. Ed ecco dove e quando è sparito il silenzio dei nostri padri: è sparito insieme a noi, è crollato insieme al “noi”.
