Ancora oggi, a oltre ottant’anni dall’inizio della guerra civile di Spagna, si discute sul motivo per cui Benito Mussolini dette il suo aiuto alla causa dei nazionalisti. Ossia se lo fece per puro calcolo politico, tendente a favorire l’instaurazione di un’altra dittatura di destra in Spagna scalzando il fronte popolare andato al potere il 16 febbraio 1936, oppure per ottenere il possesso di basi nelle Isole Baleari, necessarie per bloccare in caso di guerra le comunicazioni tra l’Africa Settentrionale e la Francia, paese al quale il governo fascista intendeva contendere il dominio del Mediterraneo centro-occidentale, e chiedere rivendicazioni territoriali. Lo storico statunitense Coverdale ha scritto che “l’aiuto italiano” alla causa di Franco, espressosi sia militarmente che politicamente, fu “un elemento essenziale per la vittoria nazionalista”. Per contro, l’essersi assicurato una Spagna amica rappresentò per il Duce un successo che in seguito avrebbe assunto carattere deludente, poiché Franco, restando fedele a quanto aveva dichiarato durante il conflitto di mantenere la neutralità nella seconda guerra mondiale, si rifiutò di schierarsi militarmente con le potenze dell’Asse.
