Ciò è visto con gli occhi di protagonisti solo in parte consapevoli dello scenario grandioso in cui si muovono. Attilio, l'ex garibaldino che sperimenta tutte le forme e le miserie del precariato; Rosa, vittima predestinata ma non docile dello sfruttamento e dell'arroganza di chi comanda; Canzio, il ribelle per indole, refrattario all'ideologia e attratto dall'azione. Assieme a costoro una folla colorita di personaggi turbolenti e litigiosi, spesso realmente esistiti; trascinati in vicende politiche e umane che li porteranno dalle pianure e dai colli di Romagna alle paludi dell'Agro romano, fino ai campi di battaglia in Grecia. Umili costruttori di un Sole dell'Avvenire che non sorgerà mai, quanto meno nelle forme che speravano. Nel comporre forse il più ambizioso dei suoi romanzi, inizio di una trilogia estesa per un settantennio, Evangelisti si è tenuto lontano dalle opere, letterarie e cinematografiche, che hanno trattato lo stesso tema. Nessuna retorica, nessun miserabilismo, nessuna esaltazione della civiltà rurale. Solo la cronaca, secca e a volte spiazzante, di piccola gente partecipe di un'impresa immensa. Un'epopea, sì, ma narrata rifiutando gli stereotipi dell'epica a sfondo sociale.

“Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism. In our age of globalised capitalism, large labour migration, and rising nationalisms, much can be learnt from the history of the first international labour organisation. This book discusses femicide in Italy, and the cultural conversations that have resulted from feminist discourse on lethal violence against women entering the mainstream, by analyzing journalistic inquiries and literary works produced after 2012. In a global and national context where activism’s goals are mainly discursive this study deepens our understanding of the role played by written narratives in the critique of a public interest matter such as gender-based violence. The first part of the book is dedicated to the analysis of three journalistic inquiries published in book format that focus on one or more cases of femicide that happened on the Italian peninsula. The second section draws on the concept of feminist rewriting to propose the analysis of a heterogeneous body of literary texts that explore some of the most controversial and notorious femicide cases covered by previous journalistic, historical, or mythical narratives, before demonstrating the close connection between theoretical and narrative discourse within the analyzed texts. This is a fascinating case study contributing to global understandings of gender-based violence, which will be important for researchers in gender studies, sociology, and media studies.
