Nel tormentato periodo che va dagli anni Venti alle soglie degli anni Cinquanta, il fascismo si afferma ed esplode, dissolvendo, tra l'altro, la compattezza dei nuclei familiari. Spartaco, "Tito", Verardi diviene squadrista e architetto della distruzione delle conquiste del movimento operaio. Destino Minguzzi è assorbito, quasi suo malgrado, dal mondo dei clandestini e degli esuli antifascisti, e dalle sue lacerazioni a volte drammatiche. Soviettina, "Tina", Merighi si trova a partecipare alla guerra di liberazione nella più anticonformista e "romagnola" delle formazioni partigiane. Nessuno di costoro "fa la storia", ma tutti, a loro modo, vi partecipano. Non senza chiedersi, alla nascita di una nuova Italia, se la realtà corrisponda davvero ai loro auspici. Su questo interrogativo si chiude una grande saga popolare, un'opera unica nel panorama letterario italiano.

Ciò è visto con gli occhi di protagonisti solo in parte consapevoli dello scenario grandioso in cui si muovono. Attilio, l'ex garibaldino che sperimenta tutte le forme e le miserie del precariato; Rosa, vittima predestinata ma non docile dello sfruttamento e dell'arroganza di chi comanda; Canzio, il ribelle per indole, refrattario all'ideologia e attratto dall'azione. Assieme a costoro una folla colorita di personaggi turbolenti e litigiosi, spesso realmente esistiti; trascinati in vicende politiche e umane che li porteranno dalle pianure e dai colli di Romagna alle paludi dell'Agro romano, fino ai campi di battaglia in Grecia. Umili costruttori di un Sole dell'Avvenire che non sorgerà mai, quanto meno nelle forme che speravano. Nel comporre forse il più ambizioso dei suoi romanzi, inizio di una trilogia estesa per un settantennio, Evangelisti si è tenuto lontano dalle opere, letterarie e cinematografiche, che hanno trattato lo stesso tema. Nessuna retorica, nessun miserabilismo, nessuna esaltazione della civiltà rurale. Solo la cronaca, secca e a volte spiazzante, di piccola gente partecipe di un'impresa immensa. Un'epopea, sì, ma narrata rifiutando gli stereotipi dell'epica a sfondo sociale.

In The History of Italian Marxism, Paolo Favilli offers an articulated analysis of the different levels at which Marx's ideas - and 'Marxism' as a doctrinal 'system' - were received in Italy from the time of the First International up till the eve of the First World War. Rejecting any linear understanding of the relation between Marx's texts and the assumption of Marxism as the ideology of the burgeoning workers' movement, Favilli explores the growth of different forms of Marxist culture through the period of the Paris Commune, the late-nineteenth-century debate on 'revisionism', and the rise of revolutionary syndicalism. Asking in each case whether 'Marxism' meant a science, an ideology, a way of doing politics, a utopia, a myth or a religion, Favilli goes on to assess which of these 'Marxisms' died with, and which have survived, the 'crisis' at the end of the twentieth century. “Arise Ye Wretched of the Earth” provides a fresh account of the International Working Men’s Association. Founded in London in 1864, the First International gathered trade unions, associations, co-operatives, and individual workers across Europe and the Americas. The IWMA struggled for the emancipation of labour. It organised solidarity with strikers. It took sides in major events, such as the 1871 Paris Commune. It soon appeared as a threat to European powers, which vilified and prosecuted it. Although it split up in 1872, the IWMA played a ground-breaking part in the history of working-class internationalism. In our age of globalised capitalism, large labour migration, and rising nationalisms, much can be learnt from the history of the first international labour organisation. Robert Michels (1876-1936) is best known for his 1911 book Political Parties, which is still a standard reference in political science debates. Michels' work sought to prove an "iron law of oligarchy" that governs the organisational evolution of democratic political parties. The work was closely informed by Michels' engagement with the German Social Democratic Party in the early 1900s, his involvement in radical politics in France and Italy in this period, and by his interest in a range of intellectual and social movements - including feminism, nationalism, racial theory, and the emerging disciplines of sociology and political science. Using archival and printed sources hitherto overlooked in work on Michels, this new study contests previous arguments which have sought to explain Michels as a disillusioned adherent of ideas of direct democracy or as an extremist moving from revolutionary syndicalism to fascism. The biographical and intellectual influences on Michels are shown to be more complex, and more transnational, than such schematic explanations have allowed. Andrew Bonnell sheds new light on Michels' relationship with the German Social Democratic Party and on his understanding of his own role as an intellectual in a workers' party. Bonnell also analyses Michels' problematical relationship with revolutionary syndicalism in France and Italy. Michels was connected to a possibly uniquely diverse network of intellectual and political contacts in pre-1914 Europe. This transnational intellectual history illuminates the intellectual worlds in which Michels moved and presents a new interpretation of his shift from the radical left of the spectrum to Italian fascism, an intellectual itinerary which has intrigued many historians.
