Fabrizio Crisafulli analizza in questo libro i caratteri e le modalita operative di quel particolare tipo di ricerca che ha chiamato "teatro dei luoghi," a oltre vent'anni dalla sua prima formulazione. Un lavoro nel quale il "luogo" e l'insieme delle relazioni che lo costituiscono vengono assunti dall'autore come matrici della propria creazione teatrale, in tutti i suoi aspetti: la drammaturgia, il corpo, la parola, lo spazio, la luce, il suono, la tecnica. La necessita di questa ricerca, il suo riportare l'attenzione sui luoghi, le realta locali, la prossimita, si e riaffermata nel corso degli anni per l'accrescersi delle questioni legate allo sviluppo mediatico, alla perdita di contatto della vita quotidiana con i luoghi, e per le criticita che le forme di comunicazione a distanza e i social network creano, accanto a nuove opportunita, sul piano delle relazioni umane e dei modi di sentire lo spazio. Anche l'uso delle nuove tecnologie, nel lavoro di Crisafulli, deriva da un ascolto profondo dei siti. Il volume fa definitivamente luce sul fatto che il "teatro dei luoghi" - nell'uso comune a volte inteso (e frainteso) semplicemente come teatro che si svolge fuori dagli edifici teatrali - non e definito dallo spazio dove si realizza lo spettacolo, ma dall'idea stessa di "luogo" e dal modo specifico in cui il lavoro si relaziona al sito, in qualsiasi posto si svolga. E descrive, attraverso riflessioni ed esempi concreti, un modo radicalmente nuovo di concepire e fare il teatro. Da molti anni ormai la ricerca di Crisafulli si e orientata verso un'analisi delle modalita d'impiego della luce, utilizzata sia in funzione spazio-temporale sia come elemento drammaturgico nella costruzione dello spettacolo. Particolarmente interessanti per l'originalita dell'assunto sono gli interventi legati al progetto del cosiddetto teatro dei luoghi, nel quale un luogo reale, esplorato nelle sue caratteristiche tipologiche e nella sua identita, e assunto come testo e matrice del lavoro. This book looks at various important events relating to the poetics of light in theatre production in the West in the twentieth century, from the great reformists at the beginning of the century to contemporary artists such as Josef Svoboda, Alwin Nikolais and Robert Wilson. The intention isn't to outline a somewhat comprehensive history of stage lighting, instead it is an attempt to identify some basic issues concerning its use. Lighting issues are unshackled from the limited contexts of technique and image, where they often end up only to be relegated, and examined in the context of the performance's space/time structure, poetic and dramatic construction, and the relationship with the performer. A section dedicated to the theatrical work of the author outlines the distinctive point of view behind the book, regarding the creative processes and the operational relationship with technique. The title Active Light is a direct reference to Adolphe Appia who, at the end of the nineteenth century, was one of the first to deal with the issue of light explicitly as an artistic issue in theatre, with his own writings and creations. As far as Appia was concerned lumiere active was expressive light, creating shapes, forming poetic matter and dramatic substance."

Il n. 1/2010 di «Prove di Drammaturgia», curato da Gerardo Guccini, si divide in quattro parti distribuite due a due su versanti distinti e complementari. L'intervento di Hans-Thies Lehmann e gli Atti del Convegno “Dramma vs postdrammatico” riguardano la lettura teorica e storicista del fenomeno; mentre la relazione di Renata Molinari sulla sua collaborazione con Claudio Meldolesi intorno al ruolo del dramaturg, e, in seguito, le interviste a Motus, Fabrizio Arcuri e Marco Martinelli, inseguono i percorsi della parola scenica fra gli intrecci di esperienze e codici di cui è composta la società contemporanea. Confrontato al novecentesco conflitto fra dramma e teatro, che contrapponeva fautori dell'autore e sostenitori dell'autonomia dei linguaggi scenici, l'attuale confronto fra dramma e postdrammatico si colloca diversamente nell'orizzonte degli studi poiché il dramma, al quale si fa riferimento, è – all'opposto dell'idea letteraria di dramma – manifestazione diretta e spesso inscindibile del teatrale. Si tratta, cioè, di “scritture sceniche” testualmente espresse e di “drammaturgie consuntive” (Siro Ferrone) che si sviluppano all'incrocio di continui passaggi – come osserva Anna Barsotti a proposito di Emma Dante – fra la «lingua dei testi» e la «lingua degli spettacoli». Dimensione performativa della parola e verbalità della performance e si intrecciano nelle drammaturgie di Marinagela Gualtieri, di Spiro Scimone, di Franco Scaldati, dei Forced Entertainment e di Richard Maxwell. Attenti al meticciato estetico e culturale fra dramma e postdrammatico anche gli interventi di carattere metodologico. Lehmann osserva che vi possono essere testi postdrammatici rappresentati drammaticamente e, viceversa, testi drammatici rappresentati in modo postdrammatico. Jean-Pierre Sarrazac, nel sostenere la lunga durata del rinnovamento drammatico ottocentesco, apre il testo alle proprietà postdrammatiche del caos contemporaneo. Marco De Marinis riassume le nozioni emerse negli studio sulla drammaturgia grazie all'avvento di una prospettiva postdrammatica. Lorenzo Mango si sofferma sulle dinamiche fra corpo, senso e parola.
