Il 6 febbraio 1927 la «Domenica del Corriere» pubblica, con il titolo «Chi lo conosce?», la foto segnaletica di un uomo ricoverato nel manicomio di Torino e senz’altra identità che il numero 44170. Inaspettatamente, di identità ne affiorano addirittura due, opposte e inconciliabili. Chi è veramente lo sconosciuto? Il colto e raffinato professor Giulio Canella, provvisto di una moglie fervida e piacente, di un rispettabile «milieu» e di una cospicua agiatezza? O il randagio e miserabile Mario Bruneri, ex tipografo ricercato per truffa e provvisto solo di un’interminabile sfilza di guai? La commozione dilaga e l’Italia intorpidita dal regime si scuote, si agita, si divide, lasciandosi travolgere da un vortice di agnizioni, perizie e sentenze che si placherà solo quattro anni più tardi. Il caso dello «smemorato di Collegno», nato sotto il segno «dell’ambiguità, dell’ambivalenza, dello sdoppiamento o dimezzamento» e già in sé pirandelliano, non poteva non attirare l’attenzione di Sciascia, che nel «Teatro della memoria» lo ripercorre con l’accanimento del detective e l’urgenza di verità del filosofo, mostrandocene le più segrete implicazioni. Il medesimo interesse per l’enigma della memoria – che il «presente totalizzante e totalitario», simile a un’Inquisizione, tende a distruggere – e dell’identità anima «La sentenza memorabile», dedicato a un altro appassionante e tenebroso caso di identità usurpata: l’«affaire» Martin Guerre, che ha come sfondo la Francia del XVI secolo.

Federico Campbell (1941-2014) è stato un giornalista, narratore, saggista ed editore messicano. Quando scoprì i romanzi di Leonardo Sciascia, nel 1978, lo scrittore siciliano diventò per lui un punto di riferimento imprescindibile.
