Prompted by the 'linguistic turn' of the late 20th century, intellectual and conceptual historians continue to devote a great deal of attention to the study of concepts in history. This innovative and interdisciplinary volume builds on such scholarship by providing a new history of the term 'economy'. Starting from the Greek idea of the law of the household, Luigi Alonzi traces the different meanings assumed by the word 'economy' during the middle ages and early modern era, highlighting the semantic richness of the word and its uses in various political and cultural contexts. Notably, there is a particular focus on the so-called Oeconomica literature, tracking the reception of works by Plato, Aristotle, the 'pseudo' Aristotle and Xenophon in the Italian and France Renaissance. This tradition was incredibly influential in civic humanism and in texts devoted to power and command and thus affected later debates on Natural Law and the development of new scientific disciplines in the 17th and 18th centuries. In exploring this, the analysis of the function of translations in the transmission and transformation of meanings becomes central. 'Economy' in European History shines much-needed light on an important challenge that many historians repeatedly face: the fact that words can, and do, change over time. It will thus be a vital resource for all scholars of early modern and European economic history.

Politics and Aesthetics in European Baroque and Classicist Tragedy is a volume of essays investigating European tragedy in the seventeenth century, comparing Shakespeare, Vondel, Gryphius, Racine and several other vernacular tragedians, together with consideration of neo-Latin dramas by Jesuits and other playwrights. To what extent were similar themes, plots, structures and styles elaborated? How is difference as well as similarity to be accounted for? European drama is beginning to be considered outside of the singular vernacular frameworks in which it has been largely confined (as instanced in the conferences and volumes of essays held in the Universities of Munich and Berlin 2010-12), but up-to-date secondary material is sparse and difficult to obtain. This volume intends to help remedy that deficit by addressing the drama in a full political, religious, legal and social context, and by considering the plays as interventions in those contexts. ""The Politics of Princely Entertainment explores the transformations in the politics of entertainment of the Italian aristocratic classes during the second half of the seventeenth century, at a time in which profound social and cultural shifts influenced the production and consumption of music in radical ways. The emergence of commercial theaters in the 1630s in Venice and the great appeal that opera began to have on a large and international audience required the aristocracy to take up a new role within the complex network of agents responsible for the production not only of opera but of music in general. The increasing competition between commercial opera theaters, ruling courts, aristocratic families and religious institutions and the consequent professionalization of roles that previously relied solely on patronage meant that singers, poets and composers acquired unprecedented negotiating power. This books explores these questions following the journeys and ventures of two of the most prominent patrons in seventeenth-century Italy, Prince Lorenzo Onofrio Colonna and his wife Maria Mancini. During the thirty years under exam, 1659-1689, the Colonna were the most influential and active agents in the musical life of Rome: they sponsored an unprecedented number of operas, serenatas, oratorios, public ceremonies and carnival parades while supporting the careers of the most prominent composers, librettists, musicians and singers of the time. Ricerche restituisce un ampio repertorio di una produzione architettonica in gran parte sconosciuta, frutto di indagini sul campo nelle province campane, mentre il volume Campania. Saggi collaziona contributi su temi critici di approfondimento sul rapporto tra la cultura campana, la corte aragonese e il lessico architettonico del classicismo rinascimentale. Lo studio delle vicende dell'architettura del Rinascimento, includendo in tale periodo il Quattrocento, a partire dal centro propulsore toscano fiorentino fino alle realtà locali, e il Cinquecento, nelle sue evoluzioni manieristiche, è incentrato sulle aree regionali descritte e, in particolare, sulla definizione in Campania del rapporto, dell'apporto e dell'attività dei maestri fiorentini e degli artefici provenienti dalle aree toscane. Tale indagine è strumento indispensabile per individuare nel Rinascimento delle corti italiane non una contrapposizione alternativa al lessico toscano oppure una semplicistica filiazione, ma una analogia di sperimentazioni, una continuità di temi e una rielaborazione delle tradizioni autoctone. Ad introduzione del volume i saggi di A. Gambardella, di D. Jacazzi e di S. Borsi indagano le ragioni di una ricerca sul rapporto tra la cultura albertiana e la corte aragonese, individuando tematiche e modelli della sperimentazione e diffusione del linguaggio classicista.
