Il volume tratta del tempio del Sardus Pater ad Antas (Fluminimaggiore, sud Sardegna) e contiene dodici studi dei maggiori specialisti di archeologia, storia, architettura, epigrafia del mondo fenicio-punico e romano. Sono ricordati gli scavi, i vari rinvenimenti e le tante vicende della zona del tempio nei secoli XIX e XX. È quindi descritta una necropoli nuragica rinvenuta nei pressi e composta da quattro tombe contenenti ance bronzetti. Sono poi ripubblicate le trenta iscrizioni fenicie con alcune nuove interpretazioni. La descrizione dettagliata delle numerose terrecotte architettoniche rinvenute pone molti problemi circa la copertura del tempio. Sono descritte le varie fasi costruttive dell’edificio romano e viene data una nuova interpretazione delle vasche presenti nella cella (costruite per la sistemazione di un frantoio). Sono presenti e discussi i vari problemi posti dall’iscrizione latina circa il restauro del tempio. È data una esauriente descrizione ed una presumibile interpretazione dei vari bronzetti figurati (materiale votivo in minima parte inedito). È trattato, con notevole varietà di argomenti, il problema della proprietà e del culto imperiale. Particolarmente notevole lo studio riguardante la testa marmorea di una statua femminile, acrolitica, di culto e quello sulla statua del Sardus Pater a Delfi, ricordata da Pausania. Conclude il volume una sintetica descrizione del luogo sacro e la dettagliata posizione e situazione di centri metalliferi ed aree minerarie. Ottima la documentazione cartografica e topografica. Temples are the most prestigious buildings in the urban landscape of ancient Italy, emerging within a network of centres of the then-known Mediterranean world. Notwithstanding the fragmentary condition of the buildings remains, these monuments and especially their richly decorated roofs are crucial sources of information on the constitution of political, social and craft identities, acting as agents in displaying the meaning of images. The subject of this volume is thematic and includes material from the Eastern Mediterranean (including Greece and Turkey). Contributors discuss the network between patron elites and specialized craft communities that were responsible for the sophisticated terracotta decoration of temples in Italy between 600 and 100 BC, focusing on the mobility of craft people and craft traditions and techniques, asking how images, iconographies, practices and materials can be used to explain the organization of ancient production, distribution and consumption. Special attention has been given to relations with the Eastern Mediterranean (Greece and Anatolia). Investigating craft communities, workshop organizations and networks has never been thoroughly undertaken for this period and region, nor for this exceptionally rich category of materials, or for the craftspeople producing the architectural terracottas. Papers in this volume aim to improve our understanding of roof production and construction in this period, to reveal relationships between main production centres, and to study the possible influences of immigrant craftspeople.

To date, Rome’s intervention to the West from the mid-second century BC has not really been looked at with any sense of overview. Instead, there has been an unconnected series of micro-regional studies looking at particular areas, from the river Ebro in Spain round to Italy on the land front, and from the Balearic Islands to Corsica, Sardinia and even Sicily as regards the seaborne aspect. In contrast, the aim of this volume is to push the historical and archaeological debates about Rome’s expansion beyond these traditional geographical boundaries and the discipline-based previous research. The entire north-western Mediterranean is treated as a micro-region and is addressed using various interdisciplinary approaches. The result is to provide an innovative and comprehensive overview of the north-western Mediterranean in a period of historical crossroads, aided particularly by focusing on the connectivity and integration within this region as two interrelated issues. While Republican Rome enforced itself as an expansive power towards the West, all sorts of polities, military operations and individuals also played a significant role in creating interconnectivity and integration of the north-western Mediterranean into a new hybrid reality. In order to uncover such processes of hybridisation, contributors to this volume were encouraged to focus on the historical, archaeological and numismatic material from several areas within the region, and to incorporate aspects of interdisciplinary methodologies in order to address the region’s military, political, social and economic interconnections with Italy, Rome and each other within the overall period.

This volume offers new insights into food and culture. “I Cartaginesi, che avevano chiaramente gli dèi contro […] decretarono di propiziarsi con ogni mezzo gli dèi oltraggiati. E siccome non avevano accolto fra i loro culti né Kore né Demetra, nominarono loro sacerdoti i cittadini più insigni, innalzarono statue alle dee con ogni solennità e fecero sacrifici secondo il rituale greco”. Diod. XIV, 77, 4-5. Con queste parole Diodoro Siculo narra l’“importazione” del culto di Demetra, una delle più celebri divinità del mondo greco, nell’antica Cartagine. Lo storico attribuisce più precisamente la responsabilità di questo fenomeno all’empio generale cartaginese Imilcone, che violò il tempio della dea a Siracusa nel 397-396 a.C. Tuttavia, fu davvero così? Qual è la valenza storica di questa testimonianza, e quale è invece il ruolo dei dati archeologici nella composizione dell’affresco dell’incontro fra due civiltà, quella greca e quella punica, che dà luogo all’arrivo di Demetra nel mondo punico? Kalligeneia si ripropone di affrontare il tema volgendo lo sguardo al particolare caso-studio della Sardegna cartaginese, adottando una prospettiva interdisciplinare e per quanto possibile sistematica. Risultato è un compendio in cui gli strumenti epistemologici dell’archeologia, dell’antropologia culturale e della storia delle religioni si fondono per evidenziare gli attributi della divinità. Su tale premessa viene realizzato un vero e proprio catalogo di contesti archeologici sardi che intrattengono un rapporto più o meno stretto con la religiosità “demetriaca”. Ne deriva un ritratto del tutto particolare della dea della terra, che si colloca propriamente alla frontiera fra il mondo greco e quello punico.
