Non c’è italiano che non abbia una qualche crudele familiarità con il terremoto. Eppure, fingiamo di vivere in un Paese virtuale e abbiamo rimosso la sismicità che ogni anno fa registrare all’INGV tra 1.700 e 2.500 scosse superiori a magnitudo 2.5, con la drammatica ciclicità di vittime e danni ogni 4,5 anni. Ma lo Stato ha sempre inseguito solo le emergenze e ha risarcito e riparato i danni con cifre colossali, abilmente oscurate nei bilanci per circa 4 miliardi di euro in media all’anno, ogni anno, dal dopoguerra ad oggi, senza mai avviare efficaci piani di prevenzione. Questo libro tratta di terremoti, mostrando i perché del rischio sismico ampiamente ignorato o sottovalutato, e l’urgenza di avviare la prevenzione e l’autoprotezione che, a differenza di altre nazioni a forte sismicità, in Italia ancora non si imparano a scuola o nei luoghi di lavoro. L’autore pone l’accento sull’illogicità di essere uno dei Paesi più industrializzati e membro del G8, ma l’unico dove ancora scosse di media potenza possono annientare intere comunità, come è accaduto a L’Aquila o ad Amatrice. Vengono ripercorse tutte le tappe della storia sismica d’Italia attraverso i terremoti che l’hanno colpita duramente e ripetutamente, dal primo disastro conosciuto in Campania del 3750 a.C., all’ultimo sisma di Ischia del 2017. E più si intrecciano storie di disastri, più si arriva alla conclusione che battere il terremoto è tuttavia possibile, spendendo cento volte meno che sopperire alle emergenze più spietate. Serve un salto culturale, recuperando lo sguardo lungo della prevenzione e lasciando al passato omissioni ed errori.
