La prima parte del libro, intitolata Teoria, filologia, filosofia, presenta lavori più inclini alla riflessione di taglio sincronico; la seconda, intitolata Autori, generi, contesti, è a sua volta organizzata da un criterio diacronico. Naturalmente è difficile stabilire confini netti tra i diversi ambiti, proprio perché il campo è quello eterogeneo, multiplo e dialogicamente polifonico della letteratura, della critica e della teoria. The letters selected provide insight into the multi- layered spheres of activity of the literary figure and polymath Metastasio. They chronicle the artistic creativity of the court poet and his active participation in the intellectual life of his time, but also the end of the ancien régime, coupled with an awareness of the transience of all things.
