La realizzazione del primo arco rudimentale si perde nella preistoria più remota probabilmente come arma per uso caccia. Già nelle popolazioni asiatiche, greche e nell’antica Roma, era in uso l’arco composito, molto potente per l’epoca, utilizzato a scopo bellico e a caccia, con forma simile all’arco ricurvo oggi in uso unitamente ad altri modelli, con propri pregi e caratteristiche. Ad oggi, il tiro con l’arco è considerato un valido sport per il tiro alla targa e di campagna, inclusa la pratica della caccia; è superfluo ricordare che, pur essendo un’arma micidiale, è totalmente inadeguata per lo scopo bellico. Questo sport, richiede considerevole capacità di concentrazione e acutezza visiva e, a seconda della potenza dell’arma, richiede adeguata forza muscolare. In alcuni popoli, specialmente asiatici, assumeva pratica quasi religiosa. Si osservi che quest’attività costituisce un mezzo valido per socializzare e per stare a contatto con la natura, in particolare nel tiro di campagna nelle sagome che simulano gli animali. Si mettono alla prova le proprie capacità in rapporto a sé stesso, le gare individuali con terzi non costituiscono rivalità assoluta, la concentrazione è prerogativa del bravo arciere che pratica il tiro in simbiosi dapprima con sé stesso. Il manuale può essere uno strumento di consultazione per tutti gli appassionati del tiro con l’arco, dagli arcieri principianti ai più esperti, consci che il manuale non esaurisce l’argomento, ma vorrebbe essere motivo di confronto fra persone che condividono uno stesso interesse.
