Con l'acronimo BES "Bisogni Educativi Speciali" si fa riferimento a tutti quei deficit neurologici o quelle difficoltà manifestate dal bambino nell'apprendimento scolastico, non supportati da una specifica diagnosi ma che comportano comunque delle difficoltà nel rendimento scolastico. Anche i DSA "Disturbi Specifici dell'Apprendimento", rappresenterebbero infatti un bisogno educativo speciale, riconosciuto. Si tratta di una categoria diagnostica, relativa ai disturbi del neurosviluppo che riguardano i disturbi delle abilità scolastiche, ossia: Dislessia, cioè disturbo nella lettura (intesa come abilità di decodifica del testo); Disortografia, cioè disturbo nella scrittura (intesa come abilità di codifica fonografica e competenza ortografica); Disgrafia, cioè disturbo nella grafia (intesa come abilità grafo-motoria); Discalculia, cioè disturbo nelle abilità di numero e di calcolo (intese come capacità di comprendere e operare con i numeri). Nell'approccio dei disturbi in esame si è passati gradatamente dal concetto di inserimento a quello di integrazione e poi a quello di inclusione. Si propongono: strumenti compensativi e dispensativi, sport e terapia cognitivo-comportamentale.
