Con prefazione di Antonio Paolucci A soli 30 chilometri a sud est di Roma esiste un luogo affascinante, il colle del Tuscolo, dove natura, storia e mito si sovrappongono e si confondono, in un'unica stupenda cornice. Qui si trovano i resti archeologici di Tusculum, una delle più antiche città laziali, che nell'arco di circa 1500 anni fu a lungo rivale della stessa Roma, per il controllo della Valle Latina, e che, all'apice dello splendore e della potenza della sua famiglia più illustre, i Conti di Tuscolo, arrivò anche a dominarla, imponendole pontefici ed alti magistrati. Con la sua distruzione, nel 1191, ad opera dei Romani, Tusculum fu sottratta alla storia e se ne persero addirittura le tracce. Divenne un autentico mito storico e letterario e a nulla valse nei secoli la ricerca delle sue vestigia. Solo nella prima metà dell'ottocento Tusculum fu ritrovata, grazie alla lungimiranza di Luciano Bonaparte e di Maria Cristina di Savoia, che incaricarono delle ricerche veri studiosi - su tutti Luigi Canina - ai quali si deve un contributo fondamentale alla nascita della archeologia moderna. L'opera di quei pionieri della ricerca archeologica e degli studi storici su Tusculum continua tuttora, con risultati scientifici di grande importanza, ed è lungi dall'essere conclusa. Questo libro vuole far conoscere al lettore i tesori naturali e paesaggistici, archeologici e storici, artistici e culturali che il colle del Tuscolo custodisce, ma anche rendere omaggio agli studiosi di ieri e di oggi che ci hanno restituito l'antica Tusculum. Contributi di: Giovanna Cappelli, Barbara Nobiloni, Carlotta Caruso, Massimiliano Valenti, Daniela Biancolini, Giuseppina Ghini, Alessia Chiappini, Claudia Valeri. Franco Portelli è nato a Roma e vive a Rocca di Papa, nei Castelli Romani. Laureato in giurisprudenza e specializzato in sociologia e ricerca sociale, si è dedicato allo studio delle organizzazioni complesse, collaborando con il COSPOS (Comitato per le Scienze Politiche e Sociali) e con l'IRSTA (Istituto di Ricerche sullo Stato e l'Amministrazione). Nel Gruppo Olivetti per oltre 25 anni, si è occupato di organizzazione aziendale, gestione e sviluppo delle risorse umane, relazioni industriali e sindacali. È stato Direttore del Personale e Consigliere di Amministrazione di varie società del Gruppo Olivetti. Ha svolto attività di consulenza per l'Alta Direzione di imprese nazionali ed estere. Da sempre appassionato di fotografia (d'arte e di architettura, in particolare) e di musica (lirica, in particolare). Collabora con il Consorzio Sistema Bibliotecario dei Castelli Romani, nell'ambito del progetto Sagre&Profane, e con la rivista d'area VivaVoce, per la promozione e la valorizzazione del ricco patrimonio naturalistico, storico, archeologico, artistico e culturale dei Castelli Romani. Ha pubblicato il volume fotografico L’Abbazia Greca di Grottaferrata. Valeria Beolchini è nata a Bologna, si è laureata in storia medievale presso l'Università “La Sapienza” di Roma e ha conseguito il titolo europeo di dottore di ricerca in archeologia medievale presso l'Università di Alicante (Spagna). È ricercatrice presso l'Escuela Española de Historia y Arqueología en Roma-CSIC e si dedica principalmente al progetto Tusculum, cui collabora in maniera continuativa dal 1996. È autrice di due libri e di diversi articoli, la maggior parte dei quali dedicati alla storia ed alla evoluzione di Tusculum in epoca medievale.

The Geography of Strabo is an encyclopedia of geographical knowledge, consisting of 17 'books', written in Greek by Strabo, an educated citizen of the Roman Empire of Greek descent. In his 17 books, divided into three volumes, Strabo deals with ancient physical geography and chorography, by which he means political geography. The two are combined in this work, which makes a "circuit of the earth" detailing the physical and political features. Strabo's Geography contains a considerable amount of historical data, as he worked on his Geography and now missing History (his other work) at the same time.
