Jeden z najstarszych zabytków literatury greckiej i europejskiej. Autorstwo eposu przypisywane jest Homerowi. W ostatnim roku wojny trojańskiej Achilles, najmocniejszy grecki żołnierz, wycofuje się z walk. Powodem jest gniew na Agamemnona, który uprowadził jego brankę Bryzejdę. W dalszej części poznajemy kolejnych wojowników. Duży wpływ na przebieg wydarzeń mają także greckie bóstwa. Ostatecznie Achilles wraca do walki, zabija Hektora i lituje się nad jego zrozpaczonym ojcem. Tym samym gniew Achillesa dobiega końca. Homer (VIII wiek p.n.e.) - pierwszy znany z imienia europejski poeta; pieśniarz, wędrowny śpiewak, recytator, twórca ustnej poezji heroicznej. Stałe elementy konwencji jego utworów określane są mianem stylu homeryckiego. Pochodził z Grecji, ale nie rozstrzygnięto ostatecznie, z którego miasta. W różnych częściach państwa stawiano mu posągi i świątynie. Według legendy miał być ślepcem. Właściwie każdy element jego biografii pozostaje do dziś kwestią sporną, niektórzy badacze podważają nawet jego istnienie.
