In 1862, the recently formed partnership of Pawson and Brailsford produced the first of their illustrated guides to Sheffield and the surrounding area. Three more such guides followed in 1879, 1889 and 1899, and this book brings together illustrations from the four editions as a summary of the changes taking place in the expanding town during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Sheffield grew in the 19th century from a being a small town tucked into the edge of the Pennine hills to become a major centre of industry. The medieval streets and lanes, based around the parish church, were replaced by a modern bustling commercial centre, with buildings reflecting the prosperity and civic pride of its citizens. Industry had started in individual workshops attached to the homes of the workmen, and in isolated water powered mills and grinding wheels scattered along the streams flowing from the surrounding hills. That industry became concentrated in works which brought together and integrated the separate skills. Some works spread to line the once rural Don valley taking advantage of the canal and railways which overcame the town's isolation. Others remained in the centre of the expanding town, sharing the streets with housing, shops and the new civic buildings. Guided by the available illustrations, this book attempts to provide some of the context in which many of these changes occurred. Some serve to illustrate more remote history and the origins of the town, many show the developments taking place through the 19th century, while others carry the history into the 20th century, and even to the present day.

The nineteenth century witnessed a flowering of museums in towns and cities across Britain. As well as providing a focus for collections of artifacts and a place of educational recreation, this work argues that municipal museums had a further, social role. In a situation of rapid urban growth, allied to social and cultural changes on a scale hitherto unknown, it was inevitable that traditional class and social hierarchies would come under enormous pressure. As a result, urban elites began to look to new methods of controlling and defining the urban environment. One such manifestation of this was the growth of the public museum. In earlier centuries museums were the preserve of learned and respectable minority, yet by the end of the nineteenth century one of the principal rationales of museums was the education, or 'improvement', of the working classes. In the control of museums too there was a corresponding shift away from private aristocratic leadership, toward a middle-class civic directorship and a growing professional body of curators. This work is in part a study of the creation of professional authority and autonomy by museum curators. More importantly though, it is about the stablization of middle-class identities by the end of the nineteenth century around new hierarchies of cultural capital. Public museums were an important factor in constructing the identity and authority of certain groups with access to, and control over, them. By examining urban identities through the cultural lens of the municipal museum, we are able to reconsider and better understand the subtleties of nineteenth-century urban society.

The nineteenth century was a time of titanic change. The modern media world came into being in the nineteenth century, when machines were harnessed to produce texts and images in unprecedented numbers. In the visual realm, new industrial techniques generated a deluge of affordable pictorial items, mass-printed photographs, posters, cartoons, and illustrations. These alluring objects of the Victorian parlor were miniaturized spectacles that served as portals onto phantasmagoric versions of 'the world.' Although new kinds of pictures transformed everyday life, these ephemeral items have received remarkably little scholarly attention. Picture World shines a welcome new light onto these critically neglected yet fascinating visual objects. They serve as entryways into the nineteenth century's key aesthetic concepts. Each chapter pairs a new type of picture with a foundational keyword in Victorian aesthetics, a familiar term reconceived through the lens of new media. 'Character' appears differently when considered with caricature, in the new comics and cartoons appearing in the mass press in the 1830s; likewise, the book approaches 'realism' through pictorial journalism; 'illustration' via illustrated Bibles; 'sensation' through carte-de-visite portrait photographs; 'the picturesque' by way of stereoscopic views; and 'decadence' through advertising posters.
