In den fünfziger Jahren hatte die Frau ausschließlich Hausfrau und Mutter zu sein, hatte 24 Stunden lang für das Wohl und Wehe der Kinder da zu sein. Die sich aufopfernde Mutter und brave Ehefrau war das Leitbild. Ob aus Lust oder als Mitverdienerin für den kleinen Luxus, berufstätige Frauen zahlten immer mit einem schlechten Gewissen. Berufstätige Frauen- obwohl es Millionen gab- waren gesellschaftlich weniger geachtet, und Männer, deren Frau zu Hause blieb, pflegten stolz zu sagen: „Meine Frau hat es nicht nötig, zu arbeiten.“ Lebensmittekrisen wurden schweigsam erduldet und mit Medikamenten behandelt. Darüber zu sprechen war ein Tabu. Heute wollen Frauen in erster Linie leben- lange und gut. Sie bekennen sich dazu, dass es Unterschiede zwischen Mann und Frau gibt, dass Männer und Frauen unterschiedlich denken und fühlen, und stehen zu ihrer Weiblichkeit, zu ihren weiblichen Gefühlen. Weder wollen Frauen in Kindergeschrei und Küche ersticken, noch wollen sie das private Glück der Karriere opfern. Wo liegt die Balance zwischen Beruf, Haushalt, Kinderzimmer und meinen Interessen, fragt sich die Frau von heute. Der Wunsch, weder auf ein Leben gemeinsam mit Kinder noch auf berufliche Emanzipation zu verzichten, bedingt die Doppelorientierung vieler Mütter von heute. In das starre Gefüge der Erwerbswelt lässt sich ein Leben mit Kind jedoch schwer einpassen, ebenso wie die Anforderungen im familiären Bereich- wollen sie die Eltern selbst erfüllen- ein starkes berufliches Engagement ausschließen. Der Wechsel zwischen Beruf und Familie ist darüber hinaus auch auf eineremotionalen Ebene aufgrund der unterschiedlichen Erwartungen an die Person häufig schwierig. Der Frauenmagazin „Brigitte“ bildet aber im Gegensatz dazu überwiegend Frauen ab, denen es gelingt, ein harmonisches Gleichgewicht zwischen Beruf und Familie herzustellen. „Brigitte“ stellt häufig beruflich stark motivierte Mütter vor.

Feminist Space: Exhibitions and Discourses between Philadelphia and Berlin, 1865-1912 investigates the relationship between gender and the production of public space, namely the exhibitions of feminine bourgeois culture that were created in Berlin between 1865 and 1912. This book demonstrates that these exhibitions gave expression to evolving bourgeois feminist discourses that proposed an expanded public sphere, containing separate and equal, masculine and feminine qualities. In addition, these feminine exhibitions were enriched by contact with and participation in the Woman's Buildings constructed at the 1876 (Philadelphia) and 1893 (Chicago) American world exhibitions, as well as the ideals of the German applied arts movement. As the exhibitions of feminine bourgeois culture were hugely popular and financially successful events, they attracted attention and stimulated discourse and debate. This book proposes that German bourgeois feminists created unique public spaces, which can be seen as contributing to the seminal architectural culture, which emerged in Germany prior to 1914.
