Inhaltsangabe:Einleitung: Die Idee zu dieser Diplomarbeit entstammt einem Internetartikel der Onlineredaktion des ORF vom 19. März 2005, in dem über ein Projekt zur Wiederbelebung und Revitalisierung des alten Wallfahrerwegs von Wien nach Mariazell, der Via Sacra berichtet wurde, mit dem ehrgeizigen Ziel 200.000 zusätzliche Pilger anzulocken . Nachdem ich im Jahr davor zum ersten Mal in meinem Leben an einer (Jugend-)Wallfahrt auf exakt dieser Strecke teilgenommen hatte, erregte dieser Artikel sofort meine Aufmerksamkeit und sah schließlich darin die Chance, in meiner Diplomarbeit fachliche mit persönlichen Interessen zu kombinieren. Ich kannte schon damals bestimmte Teilstrecken von zahlreichen Wanderungen als Kind und Jugendlicher mit meinen Eltern, Religion spielte darin jedoch keine Rolle. Nun, da ich trotz der anfangs großen Skepsis, auch einmal die Seiten gewechselt und die gesamte Wegstrecke als Wallfahrer begangen hatte, war auf einmal ein ganz konkreter und persönlicher Bezug zu diesem Thema gegeben, dazu noch verbunden mit meinem Studienschwerpunkt der Tourismusgeographie. Noch wusste ich aber nicht, worauf ich mich dabei eingelassen hatte. Es ist unmöglich, eine wissenschaftliche Arbeit über die Revitalisierung eines alten Wallfahrtsweges zu schreiben, ohne ein Grundwissen über das Wesen, die Entstehung und die verschiedenen Formen der Wallfahrt und Pilgerschaft zu besitzen, auch wenn das Hauptaugenmerk im Bereich des Tourismus bzw. der Regionalentwicklung liegen sollte. Nachdem meine theoretische Vorbildung in diesem Bereich jedoch schlicht nicht vorhanden, beziehungsweise (vor meiner Teilnahme an der Perchtoldsdorfer Jugendwallfahrt 2004) stattdessen von bestimmten Stereotypen und Vorstellungen geprägt war (ich verband mit dem Thema Wallfahrt hauptsächlich frömmelnde alte Frauen, die rosenkranzbetend nach Maria Irgendwo gehen), musste ich mir dieses Grundwissen selbst aneignen. Der fehlende theologisch-religionswissenschaftliche Hintergrund und persönliche Umstände verzögerten mein Vorhaben erheblich, und erst mal eingelesen in eine Unzahl an theologischen, sozialwissenschaftlichen und anthropologischen Werken zum Thema Pilgern und Wallfahren, fiel es mitunter schwer, den eigentlichen Fokus der Arbeit nicht aus den Augen zu verlieren.
