Das Thema "Kunst im Dienst der Nation" wird so lange nicht an Brisanz verlieren, wie der Nationalismus in Politik und Gesellschaft auch die Ausdrucksmittel der Bildenden Kunst zu seinen Zwecken nutzt, beispielsweise um Identität nationaler Gruppen durch Bilder, Skulpturen und Architekturen zu stiften oder zu bekräftigen, aber auch um diese Konstrukte mit den Mitteln der Kunst zu attackieren. Die in diesem Band versammelten Beiträge zeigen exemplarisch, auf welche Weise die Kunst zur Formung nationaler Identitäten beigetragen hat. Das Thema wird aus zwei verschiedenen Blickwinkeln fokussiert: Einerseits geht es um die künstlerischen Konstruktionen nationaler Kunst. Analysiert werden sowohl nationale Ikonographien als auch die nationalen Aufladungen bestimmter Materialien, Farben, Techniken oder Ornamente. Andererseits widmet sich der Band jedoch auch der nationalen Vereinnahmung, Instrumentalisierung und Kategorisierung von Kunstwerken, wie sie von der Kunstkritik, der Kunstgeschichte, den Museen oder anderen Institutionen betrieben werden. Da der Nationalismus erst um 1800 zu einem wesentlichen Sinnstiftungs- und Orientierungsmuster wurde, ist der Blick in besonderem Maße auf die Kunst der Moderne gerichtet. Gleichwohl wurden bewusst auch Vor- und Frühformen einer sich patriotisch gebärdenden Kunst ins Blickfeld einbezogen. Die daraus resultierende Bandbreite bietet einen vielschichtigen Querschnitt durch die kunsthistorische Nationalismus-Forschung.

Recent collection of essays discusses the historical event and the multifarious consequences of the 1867 Compromise (Ausgleich, Settlement), conducted between the Habsburg monarch, Francis Joseph and the Hungarian political ruling class. The whole story has usually been narrated from a plainly Cisleithanian viewpoint. The present volume, the product of Hungarian historians, gives an insight into both the domestic and the international historical discourses about the Dual Monarchy. It also reveals the process of how the 1867 Compromise was conducted, and touches upon several of the key issues brought about by establishing a constitutional dual state in place of the absolutist Habsburg Monarchy. The essays contained in this volume were originally delivered as papers to a conference on the German-language broadcasting of the BBC, held in London in 2002. For over sixty years, the BBC German Service was Britain's most authoritative voice to the German-speaking world, representing a virtual paradigm of British cultural and political attitudes towards Germany and Austria - and helping to define their perceptions of Britain and the British. Despite the BBC's enormous cultural standing and influence, however, this volume is the first to evaluate the Corporation's German-language broadcasting since the BBC German Service was closed down in 1999. Is cleanliness next to Germanness, as some 19th century nationalists insisted? This book explores the relationship between gender roles, domesticity, and German national identity between 1870–1945. After German unification, approaches to household management that had originally emerged among the bourgeoisie became central to German national identity by 1914. Thrift, order, and extreme cleanliness, along with particular domestic markers (such as the linen cabinet) and holiday customs, were used by many Germans to define the distinctions between themselves and neighboring cultures. What was bourgeois at home became German abroad, as 'German domesticity' also helped to define and underwrite colonial identities in Southwest Africa and elsewhere. After 1933, this idealized notion of domestic Germanness was racialized and incorporated into an array of Nazi social politics. In occupied Eastern Europe during WWII Nazi women's groups used these approaches to household management in their attempts to 'Germanize' Eastern European women who were part of a large-scale project of population resettlement and ethnic cleansing.
