Im Sudan, der ab 1821 unter die Herrschaft der osmanischen Vizekönige von Ägypten gekommen war, brach 1881 der Mahdiaufstand aus. Nach dem Abzug der anglo-ägyptischen Truppen aus dem Sudan behauptete sich der deutsche Forscher Emin-Pascha als Gouverneur der südlichsten Provinz des Sudan Äquatoria. Emin-Pascha, bürgerlich Eduard Schnitzer, schrieb einen Brief an die Times, in dem er um Hilfe bat. Die Empathie in der britischen Bevölkerung führte dazu, dass rasch die finanziellen Mittel für eine Expedition zur Befreiung Emin-Paschas aufgebracht wurden. Der Afrikaforscher Henry M. Stanley wurde beauftragt, die Expedition zu leiten. Ob und wie es Stanley gelang Emin-Pascha zu retten und welche Abenteuer er auf seiner Expedition erlebte, das beschreibt der Autor Stanley in diesem Buch.

Inzwischen habe ich ca. 20 Bände erworben und freue mich immer wieder, wenn ein neues Buch erscheint. oder: Sämtliche von Jürgen Ruszkowski aus Hamburg herausgegebene Bücher sind absolute Highlights. Dieser Band macht da keine Ausnahme. Sehr interessante und abwechslungsreiche Themen aus verschiedenen Zeit-Epochen, die mich von der ersten bis zur letzten Seite gefesselt haben! In October 1888, the Welsh-American explorer Henry Stanley started his African expedition to rescue the colonial governor Emin Pasha, whose colony in Eastern Sudan was burning with a revolt. Stanley's expedition was tired, and in search of food, he sent a couple of his team members to the closest village. They came back with a couple of locals, which sight was different from other African tribes. That was one of the first encounters with pigmees, an ancient African known from Homer's Illiad. The presented book is an accurate account of Stanley's travel into the depths of Africa and his discoveries.
