Image-based 3D shape reconstruction is essential for 3D modeling in recognition, virtual reality, generation of video games, 3D animation, and in the creation of 3D virtual fitting rooms - the sought-after application in this dissertation. In this work, we propose a novel reconstruction method that uses a generic 3D model that roughly controls the overall reconstruction shape which in turn, reduces the number of 2D images needed to just two (frontal and profile) for obtaining a 3D point model. The generic model consists of a massive set of 3D points that lack saliency, topological meaning, and relational interconnections. This is also true about points in the two canonical images. In this work, we propose finding a small set of interconnected ordered intrinsic salient points (control points) residing on the silhouette of the projections of the generic model onto the two image spaces, as well as finding those for the canonical images. Points on the generic model and the images are automatically given saliency with order and interconnections through loop-subdivision operating on those control points and their equivalent points on the canonical images. The transformation of the generic model into the specific object is done through morphing the points on the generic model to follow and be consistent with their equivalent points on the canonical images. The control points on the canonical images are automatically obtained using an active shape model (ASM) that modifies an average trained control point set attained using an offline training, to account for class shape variability and boundary regularization guaranteeing the control points to reside on the silhouette (boundary) of the individual. The reconstructed 3D model is furtherly refined through smoothing the reconstructed surface, while fixing local holes using a principle component analysis (PCA) decomposition. This reconstruction method is convenient, simple, efficient, and results in an average geometric error of less than 0.5% over 700 diverse body models from the CAESAR dataset. We then implement the contour-based articulated model to the personalized 3D model for pose recovery. The evolution of the model through the articulation process is captured in a video clip. 3D transformations are found and applied to the 3D model on its parts so that the projections of the 3D model 'match' those observed in the video sequence at corresponding frames. This is done by minimizing the error between the frontal projection body region points and the target points from the image for each independent moving part, with sub-resolution recovery errors. Once the personalized 3D model is obtained and the articulated model is implemented, the algorithm simulates how garments virtually appear on the reconstructed person under different poses. Different types of clothes are classified as tight or loose, where for the first type of garments, the garment is mapped onto the person's body, whereas for the second type, the mapping adjusts to accommodate the loose nature of the garment, and its fitting on the body of the reconstructed person model. This creates a virtual in-home fitting room for garment fitting, which is timely and is a needed application that would go hand in hand with online clothes shopping, allowing the trying of garments at home with changing poses before ordering them, and can be updated as often as necessary to accommodate changes in physique, weight, aging, etc. This is also done with minimum requirements from the user aside from taking two images and a video of pose articulations using their cam or smart phone, and stands as a useful, needed, and attractive App.

This thesis has been accomplished in Crisalix in collaboration with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra within the program of Doctorats Industrials. Crisalix has the mission of enhancing the communication between professionals of plastic surgery and patients by providing a solution to the most common question during the surgery planning process of ̀̀How will I look after the surgery?''. The solution proposed by Crisalix is based in 3D imaging technology. This technology generates the 3D reconstruction that accurately represents the area of the patient that is going to be operated. This is followed by the possibility of creating multiple simulations of the plastic procedure, which results in the representation of the possible outcomes of the surgery. This thesis presents a framework capable to reconstruct 3D shapes of faces and breasts of plastic surgery patients from 2D images and 3D scans. The 3D reconstruction of an object is a challenging problem with many inherent ambiguities. Statistical model based methods are a powerful approach to overcome some of these ambiguities. We follow the intuition of maximizing the use of available prior information by introducing it into statistical model based methods to enhance their properties. First, we explore Active Shape Models (ASM) which are a well known method to perform 2D shapes alignment. However, it is challenging to maintain prior information (e.g. small set of given landmarks) unchanged once the statistical model constraints are applied. We propose a new weighted regularized projection into the parameter space which allows us to obtain shapes that at the same time fulfill the imposed shape constraints and are plausible according to the statistical model. Second, we extend this methodology to be applied to 3D Morphable Models (3D07), which are a widespread method to perform 3D reconstruction. However, existing methods present some limitations. Some of them are based in non-linear optimizations computationally expensive that can get stuck in local minima. Another limitation is that not all the methods provide enough resolution to represent accurately the anatomy details needed for this application. Given the medical use of the application, the accuracy and robustness of the method, are important factors to take into consideration. We show how 3D07 initialization and 3D07 fitting can be improved using our weighted regularized projection. Finally, we present a framework capable to reconstruct 3D shapes of plastic surgery patients from two possible inputs: 2D images and 3D scans. Our method is used in different stages of the 3D reconstruction pipeline: shape alignment; 3D07 initialization and 3D07 fitting. The developed methods have been integrated in the production environment of Crisalix, proving their validity.

One of the most amazing capacities of the human mind is its ability to go beyond its boundaries. The well-known example of the "blind man" by Gregory Bateson helps us understand how our mind is able to expand its potentiality thanks to the use of a tool. This famous example demonstrates two specific features that characterize the relationship between the human mind and the use of tool. From a neuropsychological point of view, the tool is integrated in near space, extending it to the end point of the instrument. From a phenomenological point of view, we are present in the tool because we can use it in an intuitive way to realize our intentions. As Riva and Mantovani suggested, there is also another type of relationship between mind and technology, namely the second-order mediated action. In this case, the subject uses the body to control a distal tool that controls a different one to exert an action upon an external object. An example of a second-order mediated action is what happens with Virtual Reality (VR): I use my body to move an avatar (a distal tool) to exert an action upon an external object (a virtual environment). On one side, the outcome of this process further extends the space of action. From an experiential viewpoint, when interacting in a virtual space, we are also present in the distal virtual environment. On these theoretical bases, it is clear what makes VR development distinctively important is that it represents more than a simple technology in different domains of human society. In recent years, the field of VR has grown immensely. Practical applications for the use of this advanced technology encompasses many fields, from personnel training supported by interactive 3D images in industrial centers, to the use of interactive virtual environments for marketing purposes. One of the newest fields to benefit from the advances in VR technology is medicine and healthcare. Impressive advances in technology, coupled with a reduction in the economic costs have supported the development of more usable, useful, and accessible VR systems that can uniquely target a range of physical, psychological, and cognitive clinical targets and research questions.
