The end of authoritarian rule in 1998 ushered in an exhilarating but unsettled period of democratization in Indonesia. A more open political climate converged with a rapidly changing media landscape, yielding a vibrant and volatile public sphere within which Indonesians grappled with the possibilities and limits of democracy amid entrenched corruption, state violence, and rising forms of intolerance. In Demanding Images Karen Strassler theorizes image-events as political processes in which publicly circulating images become the material ground of struggles over the nation's past, present, and future. Considering photographs, posters, contemporary art, graffiti, selfies, memes, and other visual media, she argues that people increasingly engage with politics through acts of making, circulating, manipulating, and scrutinizing images. Demanding Images is both a closely observed account of Indonesia's turbulent democratic transition and a globally salient analysis of the work of images in the era of digital media and neoliberal democracy. Strassler reveals politics today to be an unruly enterprise profoundly shaped by the affective and evidentiary force of images.

Visual information is now an increasingly important part of the data ecosystem. While photos are captured and shared widely over the internet, methods for image search and organization remain unintuitive. The current state of the art in image organization extracts people, objects, location and time information from images and provides options for the automatic grouping of photos based on one of these attributes. As a next step in image organization, we believe that images need to be grouped based on the events they represent. However, such an event-based grouping of images is presently very primitive and imprecise.In this thesis, we present an event-based image organization approach, where the key-idea is to leverage visual concepts and spatio-temporal metadata of images in order to automatically infer their representative event; this approach combines clustering with probabilistic learning methods. Clustering is performed on images based on spatio-temporal metadata, where each cluster represents an event that occurred at a particular spatio-temporal point/region. We build probabilistic models that learn the associations between the different features and the predefined event labels of each cluster, and use the learned models to automatically infer the events in incoming photo streams. We evaluate efficiency of the proposed method by using a personal image data set, using metrics such as precision and recall.The contributions of this thesis are two-fold. First, we use several web based sources for semantically augmenting the spatio-temporal metadata corresponding to the images, and second, we combine clustering with probabilistic learning to identify and annotate events in the photo stream, using the augmented metadata and visual image concepts.

This study contributes to the literature by extending the body of knowledge on destination image in the context of event tourism. The discussion and investigations around event image provide a useful reference in this construct's psychological formation mechanism, conceptualization ground, and dimensionality framework. In addition, the established event-destination image transfer model greatly enriches the understanding of the phenomenon of events held by tourism destinations from the psychological perspective of the tourists. Moreover, the findings about image congruity offer valuable insights for tourism destinations on how to better utilize events in destination branding strategy. Furthermore, the present study also gives rich practical implications for event organizers, tourism destinations, and other relevant stakeholders.

While societies shape the way their cities look and are represented, urban images, in turn, nurture and structure social relations in multiple ways. Nowhere is this dialectical relationship between social processes and urban representations more visible than in the hosting of global spectacles such as the FIFA World Cup and the Olympic Games, which both embody some of societys deepest dreams and desires. The focus of this book is the image of cities. It is not only interested in the mechanisms of urban image construction but also in the politics of such a phenomenon, especially its social impacts in terms of representation and right to the city. The book investigates the complex power relationships that underscore the production of the urban landscape and the construction and diffusion of urban images, especially in the context of urban mega-events. It uses the notion of urban image construction as a lens through which to examine the mega-event spectacle, with chapters exploring the physical, social and political dimensions of the imagineering process as well as emerging resistance to controversial initiatives. Through an analysis of event-related urban construction efforts in Rio de Janeiro and Beijing, this book examines the effects of mega-events upon the construction of an exclusive vision of urbanity. An examination of how artists have combined performance and moving image for decades, anticipating our changing relation to images in the internet era. In Performing Image, Isobel Harbison examines how artists have combined performance and moving image in their work since the 1960s, and how this work anticipates our changing relations to images since the advent of smart phones and the spread of online prosumerism. Over this period, artists have used a variety of DIY modes of self-imaging and circulation—from home video to social media—suggesting how and why Western subjects might seek alternative platforms for self-expression and self-representation. In the course of her argument, Harbison offers close analyses of works by such artists as Robert Rauschenberg, Yvonne Rainer, Mark Leckey, Wu Tsang, and Martine Syms. Harbison argues that while we produce images, images also produce us—those that we take and share, those that we see and assimilate through mass media and social media, those that we encounter in museums and galleries. Although all the artists she examines express their relation to images uniquely, they also offer a vantage point on today's productive-consumptive image circuits in which billions of us are caught. This unregulated, all-encompassing image performativity, Harbison writes, puts us to work, for free, in the service of global corporate expansion.
