IMAGE OF ISTANBUL, IMPACT OF ECOC 2010 ON THE CITY IMAGE by Evinc Dogan offers a unique analysis of the city image by reading posters of a mega event in 2010. Istanbul "took the stage" as one of the three European Capital of Culture (ECoC) cities in 2010. In this spectacle, the urban spaces were projected as the theatre decor while residents and visitors became the spectators. The images of Istanbul pile up in videos and posters to show the city in every aspect in which everything becomes mishmash and the message gets lost in the chaos. While Istanbul is depicted as a mystified city through Orientalist representations, this image of Istanbul moves between the opposite ends of the contrasting pairs, and in contestation."

Istanbul “took the stage” as one of the three European Capital of Culture (ECoC) cities in 2010. In this spectacle, the urban spaces were projected as the theatre décor while residents and visitors became the spectators. The images of Istanbul pile up in videos and posters to show the city in every aspect in which everything becomes mishmash and the message gets lost in the chaos. While Istanbul is depicted as a mystified city through Orientalist representations, this image of Istanbul moves between the opposite ends of the contrasting pairs, and in contestation. “Culture, defined as making sense of the world (Hall, 1997: 2), is an integral part of branding a place, which involves cultural exchange (Anholt, 2005: 140). Mega-events may be used as forms of advertising for city marketing and branding, where the signification is not only about production of meaning but also staging of the meaning. The cities hosting mega-events can be turned into the protagonists of the spectacle by showcasing their cultural products as well as cultural being. Thus, what staged there are the city, its image as well as the events. The mega-events are helpful to spread the word about the city, but the meaning is created also through imaging the city and positioning this image in the minds of the people.” CONTENT IntroductionChapter 1: Understanding and dissecting the city imageChapter 2. Marketing the city and the city imageChapter 3. Istanbul: European Capital of Culture 2010Chapter 4. Posters of Istanbul 2010Chapter 5. Istanbul in betweenConclusion

Turkey’s Syrians: Today and Tomorrow Edited by Deniz Eroğlu UTKU, K. Onur UNUTULMAZ, Ibrahim SIRKECI Since the first arrival of Syrian refugees, the issue has sparked considerable national and international interest. Political discourses concentrated on state ‘generosities’ to provide protection to those coming from insecurities and possibilities to reduce ‘burden of refugees’ to receiving countries via international solidarity. While these concerns focus on the effects of hosting refugees, what happens to refugees themselves, how they are affected by government policies and how they are perceived by host country people are questions yet to be answered. This book brings together a multidisciplinary set of contributions scrutinising the case of Syrian refugees in Turkey. Yucesahin and Yazgan bring together an intriguing collection of essays drawing on a series of research carried out across the world to offer new insights on gender and migration nexus. Recent developments in the field of women's studies have led to a renewed interest in gender studies; nevertheless, these changes are having an effect and a need, which represent different theoretical and analytical tools rather than sex as a dichotomous variable. There is an increasing concern about using theoretical approaches of gender as relational, and spatially and contextually. Therefore, gender is an increasingly important concept in different areas as an analytical tool and research lens to understand how societies function, depending on diversified theoretical orientations. Gender studies not only include women's studies but also cover men's and LGBTTI-Q studies. The literature on gender has highlighted several issues, specifically gender identity, gendered representations, gender roles, gender politics, femininity and masculinity. West and Zimmerman state that analysing gender involves a complex of socially guided perceptual, interactional and micro political activities that cast particular pursuits as expressions of masculine and feminine "natures". Evidently, the role of gender in the contemporary world is at the heart of understanding migrations. From this point forth, recent developments in human mobility have heightened the need for bringing gendered approaches to all aspects of the issues of conflict and movement regarding states, societies and families from broadening perspectives to the ac-curate understanding of the whole process. Little Turkey in Great Britain by Ibrahim Sirkeci, Tuncay Bilecen, Yakup Çoştu, Saniye Dedeoğlu, M. Rauf Kesici, B. Dilara Şeker, Fethiye Tilbe, K. Onur Unutulmaz. This book is the first comprehensive account of migrants from Turkey in Britain. It covers the details of demographics based on official statistics as well as offering insights into integration, identity, employment and political participation issues drawing on eight different field research carried out recently by 8 competent academics and their teams. Not all but many things you want to know about the Turkish, Kurdish and Cypriot communities in the UK are covered. LITTLE TURKEY IN GREAT BRITAIN is the outcome of a collaborative writing exercise drawing upon a dozen of research projects carried out by authors independently and collaboratively from 2011 to 2015. This book is expected to be the authoritative resource for anybody interested in the contemporary Turkish and Kurdish speaking immigrant community in the UK. Rich material covers official statistics as well as a wealth of narratives built upon hundreds of face-to-face interviews carried out in London and elsewhere in Britain. From the back cover: “Turkish migration to British Isles has a long history but sizeable diaspora communities and enclaves of Turkish origin have emerged only in the last four to five decades. Earlier groups arrived were Cypriots fleeing the troubled island in the Eastern Mediterranean whilst Turks and Kurds of the mainland were not even considering the UK as a destination. This book is about these contemporary movers from Turkey, their movement trajectories, practices, and integration in Britain. Eight researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds and methodological schools came together to do the ground work for the students of this emerging subfield of human mobility studies. Turkey is now at the forefront of accommodating large scale inward mobility mostly due to the crisis in Syria and Iraq. This also brings some attention to Turkey’s own diasporic populations.” CONTENT Introduction Chapter 1. The Numbers about Turks, Kurds and Turkish Cypriots Chapter 2. Identity and integration Chapter 3. Political participation in London Chapter 4. Ankara Agreement and the new wave of movers Annex. Full Text of The Ankara Agreement Chapter 5. Work and social relations in London Chapter 6. Women’s labour in the Turkish ethnic economy in London Chapter 7. Remittances to Turkey Chapter 8. Turkish religious communities Chapter 9. Diasporic identities and ethnic football in London Conclusion
