Media technology plays a significant role in addressing the different sense modalities of the recipient or user. This role seems to deeply influence our concepts of time and space: The more a media technology is becoming a trigger for sensory and perceptual experiences, the bigger is the influence on temporality and spatiality. Image Temporality could be one part of the temporality discourse to connect the concepts of static and dynamic images with the approaches in modern media theory, philosophy of mind, perceptual theory, aesthetics, and film studies as well as the complex range of image science. This volume monitors and discusses the relation of time, space and visual media within the perspective of an autonomous image science.

In Time, Existential Presence and the Cinematic Image, Sam B. Girgus relates Laura Mulvey's theory of 'delayed cinema' to ideas on time and the relationship to the other in the writings of Jean-Luc Nancy, Emmanuel Levinas and Julia Kristeva, among others. The sustained tension in film between, in Mulvey's phrase, 'stillness and the moving image' enacts a drama of existential emergence. The stillness of the framed image in relation to the moving image opens 'free' cinematic time and space for a fresh engagement with crucial ethical and cultural issues. With close readings of films such as The Bicycle Thieves, Two Days, One Night, The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada, The Revenant and The Age of Innocence, this book proposes a fresh approach to reading film in the context of emerging existential presence and the ethical imperative.

This volume focuses on the relationship between time, narrative and the fixed image. As such, it highlights renewed interest in the temporality of the fixed image, probably one of the most important trends in the formal and semiotic analysis of visual media in the past decade. The various essays discuss paintings, the illustrated covers of books, comics or graphic novels, photo-stories, postcards, television and video art, as well as aesthetic practices that defy categorization such as Chris Marker’s masterpiece La Jetée. The range of works and practices examined is reflected in the different theoretical approaches and methods used, with an emphasis on semiology and narratology, and, to a lesser extent, aesthetics and psychoanalysis. The interest of this book, however, does not stem exclusively from the range and scope of the artefacts examined, or the methodological issues that are addressed; its fundamental importance rests in the contributors’ readiness to question the differentiation between fixed and moving images which all too often provides a convenient, if not altogether convincing, starting point for image analysis. . The originality and value of the contribution that Time, Narrative and the Fixed Image/Temps, Narration et image fixe makes to the body of theoretical writing on visual media lies in this challenging and comprehensive approach.

The Time Of The Image written by Zeigam Azizov and has been published by Herbert von Halem Verlag this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-04-23 with Philosophy categories.

The Time of the Image is a philosophical exploration of the notion of ›the image‹ and the relationship between the time and image. It includes the understanding of the image as a temporal object, the place of the thought combined with the mimetic faculty the result of which is the translation of fuzzy aggregates that gives rise to imitations as both artistic and political force of resistance and as a new image of thought. This thesis is a philosophical exploration of the image as technics of access to the world in the age of the proliferation. It poses the question of the understanding of the role of the image in the constitution of the subject. How does the proliferation of the image constitute the subject? The question emerges in the situation of the endless proliferation of images that poses this necessity of the distinction between images used in art and images circulated in the culture industry. The line of the argument emerges from the condition of the image being connected to time: they are temporal objects. The crucial relationship between the image and time provides the possibility for the constitution of the subject. This relationship is recorded in images as the ›recorded memory‹. Images are remnants of time and any constitution is the imitation of what is left out as ›a missing dimension of time‹. As a blend of philosophy, cultural theory, and contemporary art this book is based on the reading of Bernard Stiegler's notion that ›technics precedes thought‹, the human is the product of technics, which leaves the formation (trans-individuation) as an open process. It also involves the re-reading of Husserl's understanding of memory, the question of ›derushage‹ (the first assembly in the process of montage) and the new mimesis. Case studies of Harun Farocki's project entitled Workers Leaving the Factory and Chris Marker's film La Jetée are included to sustain the argument that in the hyper-real world of globalisation imitation became the main force of ›acting out‹.

This fascinating and innovative study explores the lives of people living in early modern Ireland through the books and printed ephemera which they bought, borrowed or stole from others. While the importance of books and printing in influencing the outlook of early modern people is well known, recent years have seen significant changes in our understanding of how writing and print shaped lives, and was in turn shaped by those who appropriated the written word. The author finds that a set of revolutions took place which transformed the lives of the Irish in unexpected ways, and that the rise of writing and the spread of print were central to an understanding of those changes which have previously only been understood to have been the result of conquest and colonisation. This is a book which will be read not only by those interested in the Irish past but by all those who are concerned with the impact of communications media on social change.

The concept of “time-image,” this book argues, holds broad potential for the historical interpretation of cultural and aesthetic works. Many works that would not ordinarily be thought to be historical artifacts reveal their intrinsic historical character in light of this innovative interpretative concept. The book’s first section,“Time-Images as Theory and Historiography,” considers alternative temporalities underlying historicizing theories and specific practices of history. Examples treated here include the notion of “retro-avantgardism,” works by the Frankfurt School on the interrelations of images and history, and Mass Observation’s dream documentation project. The second section, “Time-Images in Modernist and Postmodernist Literature,” considers literary instances in which alternative notions of historical time are engaged. These include discussions of Wyndham Lewis and “cultural revolution,” Theodor Adorno’s reading of Samuel Beckett’s Endgame, and Pier Paolo Pasolini’s use of Antonio Gramsci in the practice of poetry and philology. The third section, “Moving Images of Time,” discusses questions of cinema including children’s experience in films depicting traumatic historical events, the Quay Brothers’ animated adaptation of Bruno Schulz’s “Street of Crocodiles,” and Sergei Eisenstein’s and Charles Olson’s engagements in Mexico with pictographic representation, etymology, and archeological time.

The Images Of Time written by Robin Le Poidevin and has been published by OUP Oxford this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2007-09-27 with Philosophy categories.

The Images of Time presents a philosophical investigation of the nature of time and the mind's ways of representing it. Robin Le Poidevin examines how we perceive time and change, the means by which memory links us with the past, the attempt to represent change and movement in art, and the nature of fictional time. These apparently disparate questions all concern the ways in which we represent aspects of time, in thought, experience, art and fiction. They also raise fundamental problems for our philosophical understanding, both of mental representation, and of the nature of time itself. Le Poidevin brings together issues in philosophy, psychology, aesthetics, and literary theory in examining the mechanisms underlying our representation of time in various media, and brings these to bear on metaphysical debates over the real nature of time. These debates concern which aspects of time are genuinely part of time's intrinsic nature, and which, in some sense, are mind-dependent. Arguably, the most important debate concerns time's passage: does time pass in reality, or is the division of events into past, present, and future simply a reflection of our temporal perspective - a result of the interaction between a 'static' world and minds capable of representing it? Le Poidevin argues that, contrary to what perception and memory lead us to suppose, time does not really pass, and this surprising conclusion can be reconciled with the characteristic features of temporal experience.

This book examines the photography’s unique capacity to represent time with a degree of elasticity and abstraction. Part object-study, part cultural/philosophical history, it examines the medium’s ability to capture and sometimes "defy" time, while also traveling as objects across time-and-space nexuses. The book features studies of understudied, widespread, practices: studio portraiture, motion studies, panoramas, racing photo finishes, composite college class pictures, planetary photography, digital montages, and extended-exposure images. A closer look at these images and their unique cultural/historical contexts reveals photography to be a unique medium for expressing changing perceptions of time, and the anxiety its passage provokes.

Today, remote sensing technology is an essential tool for understanding the Earth and managing human-Earth interactions. There is a rapidly growing need for remote sensing and Earth observation technology that enables monitoring of world’s natural resources and environments, managing exposure to natural and man-made risks and more frequently occurring disasters, and helping the sustainability and productivity of natural and human ecosystems. The improvement in temporal resolution/revisit allows for the large accumulation of images for a specific location, creating a possibility for time series image analysis and eventual real-time assessments of scene dynamics. As an authoritative text, Remote Sensing Time Series Image Processing brings together active and recognized authors in the field of time series image analysis and presents to the readers the current state of knowledge and its future directions. Divided into three parts, the first addresses methods and techniques for generating time series image datasets. In particular, it provides guidance on the selection of cloud and cloud shadow detection algorithms for various applications. Part II examines feature development and information extraction methods for time series imagery. It presents some key remote sensing-based metrics, and their major applications in ecosystems and climate change studies. Part III illustrates various applications of time series image processing in land cover change, disturbance attribution, vegetation dynamics, and urbanization. This book is intended for researchers, practitioners, and students in both remote sensing and imaging science. It can be used as a textbook by undergraduate and graduate students majoring in remote sensing, imaging science, civil and electrical engineering, geography, geosciences, planning, environmental science, land use, energy, and GIS, and as a reference book by practitioners and professionals in the government, commercial, and industrial sectors.
