Media Madness written by Otto F. Wahl and has been published by Rutgers University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1995 with Business & Economics categories.

From Psycho, Silence of the Lambs, Kojak, and Melrose Place, from books, music, cartoons, advertising, and newspapers, we all derive our images of mental illness. These omnipresent media portrayals are at the least insensitive, inaccurate, and unfavorable and at the worst stigmatizing and pernicious. In this important book, Dr. Otto Wahl examines the prevalence, nature, and impact of such depictions, using numerous examples from film, television, and print media. He documents the remarkable frequency of these images and demonstrates how the media has stereotyped the mentally ill through exaggeration, misunderstanding, ridicule, and disrespect. Media Madness also shows the damaging consequences of such stereotypes - stigma, rejection, loss of self-esteem, reluctance to seek, accept, or reveal psychiatric treatment, discrimination, and restriction of opportunity. The forces that shape current images of mental illness are clarified, as are the efforts of organizations and individuals to combat such exploitation.

In recent years, the impact of deindustrialization, technological advances, and escalating costs of care has brought about immense changes in Canadian psychiatric practice. In addition, Canada - like most other countries - faces the challenge of providing accessible, effective, humane, and cost-efficient health care in the midst of downsizing, restrictions, and cutbacks. Images in Psychiatry: Canada outlines the historical development of psychiatry in Canada; highlights various aspects of current psychiatric practice, both in general and in highly specialized areas; and traces research development foci of Canadian endeavor. The contributors, a group of highly experienced and nationally and internationally recognized practitioners, provide not only an overview of the current situation but also informed predictions concerning the future of Canadian psychiatry.

Negative moral judgements seem to have been a constant fixture in the way societies and cultures have regarded groups displaying deviant behavior. This is particularly true of the mentally ill. Stereotypes are most ingrained for mental pathologies with heightened visibility in society, such as schizophrenia. Preconceived notions about danger, occult powers and mysterious malevolence which hover over the illness, contribute to the total debasement of the patient. Persons suffering from other forms of mental illness are stigmatized to a lesser degree. But the threat is real that labeling will extend to every endeavor linked to mental illness: care facilities, professionals, therapies in general and psychotropic medication in particular. Lay belief in the existence of important side-effects to this medication and public fears about the risk of addiction form the basis of very restricted, or even hostile, attitudes towards it and result in weak compliance. Inversely, psychotherapy now seems widely accepted and different forms of intervention have contributed to de-stigmatizing psychiatric illness and to stop the exclusion of patients. This book is of interest not only to psychiatrists, but also to mental health workers, psychologists, social scientists and social workers who wish to alter common precepts and prejudices regarding psychiatric disorders.

Sources In The History Of Psychiatry From 1800 To The Present written by Chris Millard and has been published by Taylor & Francis this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2022-04-19 with History categories.

This book offers a general introduction to historical sources in the history of psychiatry, delving into the range of sources that can be used to investigate this dynamic and exciting field. The chapters in this volume deal with physical sources that might be encountered in the archive, such as asylum casebooks, artwork, material artefacts, post-mortem records, more general types of source including medical journals, literature, public enquiries, and key themes within the field such as feminist sources, activist and survivor sources. Offering practical advice and examples for the novice, as well as insightful suggestions for the experienced scholar, the authors provide worked-through examples of how various source types can be used and exploited and reflect productively on the limits and constraints of different kinds of source material. In so doing it presents readers with a comprehensive guide on how to ‘read’ such sources to research and write the history of psychiatry. Methodically rigorous, clear and accessible, this is a vital reference for students just starting out within the field through to more experienced scholars experimenting with new and unfamiliar sources in the history of medicine and history of psychiatry more specifically. Chapters 4, 8, 9, 10, and 13 of this book are available for free in PDF format as Open Access from the individual product page at www.routledge.com. They have been made available under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives 4.0 license.
