The editors maintain that the current debate over school restructuring is essentially a debate over which strategy of organizing will achieve the best results. Organizational theory suggests that there are two primary mechanisms that may be used in organizing behavior within an organization: the organization as a whole, and the specific roles within the organization. Following this logic, the book is divided into two parts. The authors in part one present various answers to the question, "What must be organized in schools?" These answers include the decision-making process, external political forces around ideologies and policies, the promotion of creativity and innovation, and the best compromise between mechanistic and organic structures, among others. In part two, the authors examine how roles in schools can function as modes of organizing behavior. They present various possibilities for reorganization and improvement - specifically for the roles of teachers and administrators. The ideas include organizing and evaluating the role of teachers based, at least partially, on student outcomes; reorganizing according to the actual work a teacher does, organizing around clear goals and the provision of adequate resources; organizing the role of administrator to provide leadership to the rest of the people in the school; and using research findings to fit a specific individual to the role of administrator.

This book analyzes the effect of political and economic forces on the ideas and values disseminated to the general public by schools, movies, radio, and television. The author shows how similar and conflicting political and economic pressures influence education, movies, and broadcasting. The book provides an understanding of how ideas are shaped in American society by the interplay between government power, private enterprise, and organized advocacy groups. The story is complex with many different and conflicting strands. In a broad sense, it is the story of the public education of the American people. The book does not attempt to measure the actual effect of various media, but it does show what was intended for the education of the public mind by forces that shaped and continue to shape the content of schools, movies, and broadcasting.

England S Schools written by Elain Harwood and has been published by Historic England this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-04-01 with Architecture categories.

For most of us, school was our first detailed experience of a building outside the homes of our parents, friends and relations. Many people react emotionally when their old school, charged with so many memories, is closed or demolished. Not all school buildings are worthy of designation, but many are major local landmarks and demonstrate an important part of our society's evolution. This book aims to raise awareness of the wide range of school buildings built in England from the Reformation to the Millennium, and discusses which buildings may be worthy of greater appreciation and preservation. It summarises the development of schools and analyses how social attitudes have been expressed in their architecture and planning. Finally, it looks at the adaptation of older schools to modern needs and new uses for schools around the country, drawing on examples of best practice from Historic Building Inspectors and Advisers.

A book with nearly 300 images of six unconventional schools. What does it look like when school happens outside in a forest, at a soldering bench, or in a pig shed? When school leaders make a curriculum that follows the way a child thinks and grows, not the other way around? When class means building a roller coaster, robotics, or a biodiesel motorbike? What do we see when school truly engages kids, all the while really helping them develop the skills they need in life? This book is here to show you that none of the above is just a daydream: it's happening right now at schools around the world.
