Southwest Book Award, Border Regional Library Association, 2011 Although popularly conceived as a relatively recent phenomenon, patterns of immigrant smuggling and undocumented entry across American land borders first emerged in the late nineteenth century. Ingenious smugglers and immigrants, long and remote boundary lines, and strong push-and-pull factors created porous borders then, much as they do now. Historian Patrick Ettinger offers the first comprehensive historical study of evolving border enforcement efforts on American land borders at the turn of the twentieth century. He traces the origins of widespread immigrant smuggling and illicit entry on the northern and southern United States borders at a time when English, Irish, Chinese, Italian, Russian, Lebanese, Japanese, Greek, and, later, Mexican migrants created various "backdoors" into the United States. No other work looks so closely at the sweeping, if often ineffectual, innovations in federal border enforcement practices designed to stem these flows. From upstate Maine to Puget Sound, from San Diego to the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas, federal officials struggled to adapt national immigration policies to challenging local conditions, all the while battling wits with resourceful smugglers and determined immigrants. In effect, the period saw the simultaneous "drawing" and "erasing" of the official border, and its gradual articulation and elaboration in the midst of consistently successful efforts to undermine it.

Kyle Conway is about to make a breakthrough for Conway Brothers Construction Co.-a long sought after opportunity for a major real estate score. His wife and two boys will prosper, his brother-partner will do the same. And the Conways are delighted that friend and business colleague, Mauricio Solares, will have the chance to rise higher in society than other Mexican immigrants trying to realize the American Dream. Yes, Kyle, a bit rough around the edges but a good guy at heart, is happy for Mauricio; but his proclivity for careless, insensitive remarks about or in front of his Mexican friend, causes Cynthia Conway to chastise him repeatedly, a fact that leads to frequent verbal clashes between them. He bristles at suggestions of mistreatment. She wants to enlighten her husband and to preserve the warm friendship that the Conways have enjoyed with the Solares family. Is there a legitimate cause-perhaps beneath the surface-for tension, or is it a result of imaginations being overwrought? That question becomes critical when a vacation visit to Mexico intended to offer the Conways an opportunity for celebration and a strengthening of their marriage turns into a horror show, one that compounds suspicions and tension. Their journey south of the border turns relaxation and optimism into terror and the possibility for tragedy.

"Imaginary Lines" represent an eclectic array of poetic sketches that are inspired by various experiences in the author's life that are either real or conceived. These include impressions made by his cultural, social and economic circumstances growing up as an African American in rural East Texas; through later years as a professional in general business and governmental environments; still, however, as an African American. Mr. Walthall's book will offer examples of how, through his imagination, the most ordinary occasions may become serendipitous experiences that are tastefully humorous, sometimes poignant, and always entertaining.

This is a dotty look at life and love which was originally directed by Alan Ayckbourn. The imaginary lines are the things we wish we could say, or had said usually to the opposite sex. Here, they are asides in the dialogue which provide amusing counterpoints to what the characters are really saying to each other. Will Sir Michael get Wanda to go off with him for a weekend frolic? Will Wanda decide who she wants? Will Howard win Wanda or get stuck with Carol? Will Mrs. Burlap ever find a copy of Snowed Up with a Duchess by Mrs. Arnold Frogmore? This witty, literate romantic comedy is sure to delight and amuse.
