IMAGINATION DRIFT: SPACE FOR EVERMORE is the conclusion of the trilogy. The protagonists are spirited energy forms and their stories merge the human and animal worlds with all its rationalities and irrationalities; its realities and fantasies set in galactic space with references to life-forms on the planet. BOOK ONE: A PRINCE FOR THREE DAYS is a satiric story that focuses on King Zalador and his quest to secure a place on the Supreme Council. However, he must fulfil the requirements of a wish to achieve his objective. It takes three-tries and three-days to achieve success. The conclusion ends in the death of his wish-partner, Malcolm. Zalador’s appeal to the Council, that it was not his fault that Malcolm was killed, is rejected. BOOK TWO: THE CHALLENGE. Zalador is given a second chance but he is asked to assist a young lion, the Major, in finding a wish-partner to complete the requirements for entrance into the Supreme Council. The difficulty is that there are two lions competing for a single position on the Council and this becomes THE CHALLENGE. Zalador completes the requirements of the wish and is accepted as the new Supreme Councillor. The Major is disqualified on a technicality. BOOK THREE: SPACE FOR EVERMORE details the Major’s despair and Zalador’s concern in assisting the Major achieve his position and ascendancy to become the Chief of the Galactic Assembly and the Protector of All Lion Spirits. The Major requests the transformation into a human-people to complete the wish and he is drawn into a bewildering experience. To his chagrin Zalador has to pretend that he is not a lion during this encounter. The two lions, after multiple meetings are accepted into the Supreme Council. Major gains control of the Council renames it to be called the Galactic Assembly The Major and Zalador are successful in making changes to the Assembly, but it is the Open-Door Policy of allowing all lions into the Galactic Assembly that undermines their position.

A wish granted to Malcolm by an animal spirit transforms and transports him from the animal world to the world of ‘people’. In a delightful and satiric tale Malcolm is acknowledged as a prince and receives the adoration from the King of Ru but the prince is perceived as a danger to the motives of the administrators who wish to eliminate him as a contender to the throne of the Kingdom. Prince Malcolm’s first visit as a ‘people’ is one of survival from the plots to kill him; the second visit is consumed with ‘challenges’ to win the crown of the kingdom and the third visit embroils the prince in the struggle for the power to rule the kingdom; however, Malcolm meets an untimely end and the intent of the wish is unfulfilled.

The stories we tell in our attempt to make sense of the world—our myths and religion, literature and philosophy, science and art—are the comforting vehicles we use to transmit ideas of order. But beneath the quest for order lies the uneasy dread of fundamental disorder. True chaos is hard to imagine and even harder to represent. In this book, Martin Meisel considers the long effort to conjure, depict, and rationalize extreme disorder, with all the passion, excitement, and compromises the act provokes. Meisel builds a rough history from major social, psychological, and cosmological turning points in the imagining of chaos. He uses examples from literature, philosophy, painting, graphic art, science, linguistics, music, and film, particularly exploring the remarkable shift in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from conceiving of chaos as disruptive to celebrating its liberating and energizing potential. This collection of essays is unlike others in the field of African studies, for it is based on three very precisely delineated focal points: a particular geographical region, the sub-Sahara; specific modes of cultural production, literature and cinema; and a focus on works of French expression. This three-fold approach to exploring the relationships between power and culture in a non-Western environment greatly contributes to making this book unique from a variety of perspectives: African, Francophone and postcolonial studies, as well as cross-disciplinary, cultural, transnational and diasporic studies. Moreover, the book offers deft and innovative analyses that move beyond the rhetoric of crises on the African continent we so very often hear of, so as to present a critical reflection on the subject at hand that is specific to the sub-Sahara and at the same time intimately linked to global culture, economy and politics. The authors’ three-fold approach also presupposes that disciplinary compartmentalization increases power conflicts in academia. If only in part, compartmentalization is the result of antagonistic and competitive relations between specialization and multidisciplinary education. This book is thus a modest attempt at presenting an alternative to excessively fixed and homogeneous academic frontiers while considering that disciplinary expertise remains a must. Keeping in mind that an increasing number of scholars in Anglophone Postcolonial studies and Francophone African studies have been attempting for quite some time now to open interstices and build crossroads that can better connect them to each other, keeping in mind that these scholars work at revealing mechanisms by which any antagonistic discourses can mix, influence, act upon or react to one another, this book seeks to take a constructive step in establishing enduring grounds for multidisciplinary, cross-disciplinary and transnational academic research and collaboration.
