El objeto de este estudio es analizar el cambio social que se produjo como consecuencia del asentamiento de colonos romanos en el sur de la Península Ibérica entre los siglos III a. C.-I d. C., y que normalmente se denomina “romanización”, en el contexto de las necrópolis. Este problema lleva a plantear distintas cuestiones, como qué es la “romanización”, qué tipo de procesos tienen lugar en situaciones de contacto colonial, cómo estudiar el significado simbólico de la cultura material, o qué tipo de diálogo se estableció entre la manera de entender lo que significaba “ser romano” en diferentes contextos como la ciudad y las necrópolis, o el ámbito privado y público. Esta investigación toma como punto de partida los presupuestos teóricos de la arqueología post-procesualista, especialmente los de aquellas corrientes que entienden la Arqueología como historia cultural, en las que el contexto histórico se dota de gran importancia. En problemas como el de la “romanización” es, además, necesario prestar especial atención a las aportaciones de la teoría postcolonialista como una manera de dejar atrás visiones “esencialistas” de la cultura. Si este estudio tiene alguna virtud, es la de pretender ser un trabajo de síntesis de nuestros conocimientos sobre distintas necrópolis y su relación con el cambio social producido como consecuencia de la imposición de una situación colonial en el sur de la Península tras la conquista romana. El volumen se ha organizado en dos grandes bloques estrechamente relacionados entre sí. El primero está dedicado al análisis del concepto de la “romanización” y a la importancia de los ancestros en la recreación de la identidad individual y colectiva. El segundo apartado es el más extenso y se centra en el estudio de tres necrópolis diferentes en relación al problema que nos ocupa.

From generation to generation, people experience their landscapes differently. Humans depend on their natural environment: it shapes their behavior while it is often felt that deities responsible for both natural benefits and natural calamities (such as droughts, famines, floods and landslides) need to be appeased. We presume that, in many societies, lakes, rivers, rocks, mountains, caves and groves were considered sacred. Individual sites and entire landscapes are often associated with divine actions, mythical heroes and etiological myths. Throughout human history, people have also felt the need to monumentalize their sacred landscape. But this is where the similarities end as different societies had very different understandings, believes and practices. The aim of this new thematic appraisal is to scrutinize carefully our evidence and rethink our methodologies in a multi-disciplinary approach. More than 30 papers investigate diverse sacred landscapes from the Iberian peninsula and Britain in the west to China in the east. They discuss how to interpret the intricate web of ciphers and symbols in the landscape and how people might have experienced it. We see the role of performance, ritual, orality, textuality and memory in people’s sacred landscapes. A diachronic view allows us to study how landscapes were ‘rewritten’, adapted and redefined in the course of time to suit new cultural, political and religious understandings, not to mention the impact of urbanism on people’s understandings. A key question is how was the landscape manipulated, transformed and monumentalized – especially the colossal investments in monumental architecture we see in certain socio-historic contexts or the creation of an alternative humanmade, seemingly ‘non-natural’ landscape, with perfectly astronomically aligned buildings that define a cosmological order? Sacred Landscapes therefore aims to analyze the complex links between landscape, ‘religiosity’ and society, developing a dialectic framework that explores sacred landscapes across the ancient world in a dynamic, holistic, contextual and historical perspective.

Although the Hellenistic period has become increasingly popular in research and teaching in recent years, the western Mediterranean is rarely considered part of the 'Hellenistic world'; instead the cities, peoples and kingdoms of the West are usually only discussed insofar as they relate to Rome. This book contends that the rift between the 'Greek East' and the 'Roman West' is more a product of the traditional separation of Roman and Greek history than a reflection of the Hellenistic-period Mediterranean, which was a strongly interconnected cultural and economic zone, with the rising Roman republic just one among many powers in the region, east and west. The contributors argue for a dynamic reading of the economy, politics and history of the central and western Mediterranean beyond Rome, and in doing so problematise the concepts of 'East', 'West' and 'Hellenistic' itself.
