An increasing percentage of the population has at least one prosthetic joint. Imaging is required for both initial assessment and routine follow-up of the implant, and this book is intended as an informative and up-to-date guide to the subject. After an introductory section covering a range of background topics, the level of information offered by different imaging techniques in presurgical planning and postimplantation assessment is analyzed. The application of imaging to different joints is then carefully explored in chapters devoted to the foot and ankle, hip, knee, shoulder, and elbow, wrist and hand. In addition, two innovative chapters focus on periprosthetic DXA as the gold standard in monitoring implant survival and on the role of drug therapy in helping to ensure the durability of the prosthesis. A central feature of the book is its combination of the clinical and radiological perspectives; it will be of value to radiologists and orthopedic specialists, as well as residents in these disciplines.

There is an ever-expanding range of implants used in Orthopaedic Surgery. Nearly 200,000 joint replacement procedures are done in UK every year. The performance of these implants is assessed on radiographs. This is of interest to Orthopaedic surgeons and Radiologists alike. Information on interpretation of these radiographs is not readily available in an easily readable format. This book will assist both trainees and practicing orthopedic surgeons and radiologists in assessing the radiologic appearance of implants and their potential for future performance.

Joint Replacement Technology written by Peter A. Revell and has been published by Elsevier this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2014-06-13 with Technology & Engineering categories.

This second edition of Joint Replacement Technology provides a thoroughly updated review of recent developments in joint replacement technology. Joint replacement is a standard treatment for joint degradation and has improved the quality of life of millions of patients. Collaboration between clinicians and researchers is critical to its continued success and to meet the rising expectations of patients and surgeons. Part one introduces the advances in joint replacement technology, tribological considerations and experiments, and immune and regenerative responses to joint replacements. Part two covers the materials and techniques used in joint replacement. The advantages and disadvantages of different metals are explained here, as well as the use of ceramics. This section also addresses challenges in joint bearing surfaces, design, and cementless fixation techniques. Biological and mechanical issues are considered in part three, including healing responses to implants and biological causes of prosthetic joint failure, and a new chapter on imaging of joint prostheses. Each chapter in part four describes the clinical challenges of replacing specific joints, with specific focus on hip, knee, intervertebral disc joint, shoulder arthroplasty, elbow arthroplasty, and pyrocarbon small joint arthroplasty. Thanks to its widespread collaboration and international contributors, Joint Replacement Technology is useful for materials scientists and engineers in both academia and biomedical industry. Chemists, clinicians, and other researchers in this area will also find it invaluable. This second edition provides an updated comprehensive review of recent developments in joint replacement technology Provides coverage for the most pertinent materials science and engineering issues in depth Reviews the specific joints, biological and mechanical issues and fixation techniques

Personalized Hip And Knee Joint Replacement written by Charles Rivière and has been published by Springer Nature this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-06-30 with Medical categories.

This open access book describes and illustrates the surgical techniques, implants, and technologies used for the purpose of personalized implantation of hip and knee components. This new and flourishing treatment philosophy offers important benefits over conventional systematic techniques, including component positioning appropriate to individual anatomy, improved surgical reproducibility and prosthetic performance, and a reduction in complications. The techniques described in the book aim to reproduce patients’ native anatomy and physiological joint laxity, thereby improving the prosthetic hip/knee kinematics and functional outcomes in the quest of the forgotten joint. They include kinematically aligned total knee/total hip arthroplasty, partial knee replacement, and hip resurfacing. The relevance of available and emerging technological tools for these personalized approaches is also explained, with coverage of, for example, robotics, computer-assisted surgery, and augmented reality. Contributions from surgeons who are considered world leaders in diverse fields of this novel surgical philosophy make this open access book will invaluable to a wide readership, from trainees at all levels to consultants practicing lower limb surgery

Interfaces In Total Hip Arthroplasty written by Ian D. Learmonth and has been published by Springer Science & Business Media this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2012-12-06 with Medical categories.

This book incorporates the experience of numerous experts who explore contemporary opinion of how best to rationalise and optimise the interfaces at total hip replacement to provide the most favourable and durable results. The survival of a total hip replacement depends principally on the enduring integrity of the fixation interfaces and of the articular interface. The design of the stem and the material properties of cement largely determine the state of the component-cement inter face, while the bone-cement interface is significantly influenced by both mechanical and biological factors. The surface finish and shape of cementless implants are designed to preserve the integrity of biological fixation (osseo-integration) at the bone-component interface. Once again, both mechanical and biological factors have to be considered, while bioactive coatings accelerate bone ongrowth. Metal-on-polyethylene is the most widely used articular interface. However, it has been suggested that wear of polyethylene is one of the major factors contributing to failure of total hip replacements. The increasing prevalence of total hip replacement in younger patients has stimulated the investigation of alternative, more durable couples -including ceramic-polyethylene, ceramic-ceramic and metal-on-metal. Modularity provides greater intra-operative flexibility, but each new modular interface introduces new mechanisms of failure. These need to be anticipated and appropriate measures taken to avoid them. Hopefully this book will provide a better understanding of the factors that contribute to stable interfaces and long-term survival of total hip arthroplasty.
