Known for championing once-neglected writers such as Gower, Hoccleve, and Lydgate, Simpson has also pioneered the field of Trans-Reformation studies, dismantling the barrier between the medieval and early modern periods. Humanism, English Literature, and the Translation of Greek, 1430–1560 is the first study to trace the influence of the Quattrocento rebirth of Greek scholarship on fifteenth- and sixteenth-century English literature. It begins with the first signs of humanist Greek in England in and around Duke Humfrey's circle, at a time when no English writer could claim significant Greek literacy. It ends on the cusp of Elizabethan literary culture, when English writers much more frequently translated Ancient Greek into both Latin and the vernacular. This period witnessed a surge in the translation of Greek. It also witnessed changing beliefs about how and why Greek should be translated at all, especially under the growing pressures of the Reformation. Building on scholarship in the fields of classical reception, translation studies, and intellectual history, the volume argues that attending to the period's ideas about Greek translation fundamentally alters our perception of Tudor humanism and the classical tradition more widely. In linking biblical and patristic translation with the translation of works by pagan authors, the book shows that Renaissance humanism was less secular and more wide-ranging in its goals and interest than the standard scholarly narrative has claimed. By showing continuities between late medieval and early modern literature, it further revises arguments for the novelty of the sixteenth-century humanists. The book ultimately argues that fifteenth- and sixteenth-century English writers experienced a contradictory relationship to Greek. Desire for the language and what it stood for was tempered by the realities of its mediated transmission. Desire for Greek was also undercut by the sectarian divisions that the language came to reflect and magnify.

Medieval manuscripts do not simply witness the texts they contain: through the process of their making, they preserve and generate knowledge about literature itself. Central to the expression of method in this study is a detailed investigation of an immensely complex composite manuscript, Oxford, Bodleian Library MS Bodley 851. This manuscript survives as an important representative of textual cultures popular in late-medieval England: it attests the work of at least eight scribal agents and contains an infamous scribal version of Piers Plowman (Z-text), the sole surviving copy of Walter Map's De nugis curialium, and an array of satirical Anglo-Latin poetry, including the Apocalypsis goliae episcopi, the Speculum stultorum, and the Bridlington Prophecy. Richly illustrated venture into book production in Cambridge. William Dyngley (Peterhouse, 1393-1441), known for his personal library of at least 29 manuscripts, was primarily an editor. In the second decade of the fifteenth century, he began a major patristic project that ultimately comprised eight volumes of Augustine of Hippo, anthologies of Origin, Ambrose and Jerome, and a patristic miscellany. Dyngley also constructed thirty-five indexes for Augustine's works, which he copied in tandem with his primary text writer, the so called "Fish Scribe". This richly illustrated monograph considers the people who made the books, the network of Cambridge scribes who copied the texts, the limners who decorated them and the remarkable man behind the project. Dyngley, placed here in the context of contemporary life in a Cambridge college, is shown to be in charge at every stage of production, acquiring exemplars, correcting scribal errors, storing incomplete quires, reassigning texts from one volume, copying and revising tables of content and tallying expenses. The volume also examines the constituent features of the manuscripts themselves, non-verbal cues as well as content. Overall, it sheds considerable new light on manuscript production in the period more generally.

This volume interrogates the role of the manuscript medium in conveying history to medieval and early modern readers. The contributors adopt a capacious understanding of "history" to explore history-writing in its materiality from a variety of methodological and disciplinary perspectives. The core contentions of this book are that the material features of manuscripts helped shaping historical narratives and defining history conceptually, and that therefore, the makers of these manuscripts played an instrumental role in history-writing alongside authors. Ranging from the ninth to the sixteenth centuries and comprising materials from across Western Europe in Latin and the vernaculars, the ten chapters of this volume uncover stakes and strategies tied to highly specific contexts, such as late thirteenth-century Corbie or fifteenth-century Zurich, yet partaking in a shared practice of history-writing with manuscripts.
