A cidade de Manaus é entrecortada por inúmeros cursos d'água que se apresentam em canais hierarquicamente distribuídos em primeira, segunda e terceira ordem, fluem em suas calhas encaixadas nos pequenos morros e morrotes que formam o sítio urbano da capital do Estado do Amazonas. Quatro bacias hidrográficas se destacam transformadas pela intensa ação antrópica no uso e ocupação do solo e se apresentam com diferentes níveis de degradação, na área urbana dominam a bacia do Educandos, Mindu e duas parcialmente: rio Puraquequara e Tarumã-Açu. A microbacia do Igarapé do Mariano é área de transição do urbano para o rural e um dos formadores pela margem esquerda da bacia do Tarumã-Açu, foi o local de estudo dos – Impactos Ambientais da Exploração de Areia na Microbacia do Igarapé do Mariano no Município de Manaus-AM. Nesse contexto esta obra traz aos leitores a oportunidade de conhecer como os impactos ambientais vêm ocorrendo nessa área devido a exploração de areia, não só nas lavras em atividades, como também nas abandonadas e clandestinas, analisa também a atuação do Poder Público no controle e fiscalização da exploração dessa substância mineral.
