Henry Foster has always loved exploring the Amazon. But he didn't count on exploring something far more deadly. A grave mistake has caused Henry to lose his career as a promising scientist dedicated to studying the Amazon rainforest. Yet he's landed an assistant job at a remote research station that lets him continue there in relative peace. That is, until he's assigned to lead a documentary film crew to an abandoned mine, presumably long lost to the jungle. Upon their arrival, Henry makes an unfortunate discovery. Although the crew is detained by armed soldiers, Henry narrowly escapes with Clare Andersen, an adventurous Australian TV host. But when they make it out of the jungle and into the nearest city, they learn they're wanted for murder. Running from both the police and vicious thugs, Henry and Clare set out in a race against time to prove their innocence and save the missing filmmakers, uncovering clues to a dangerous international conspiracy set in the heart of the Amazon rainforest.

"This book, from the previously unpublished manuscript in the National Library of Ireland, is a valuable and deeply detailed edition of the diary kept by Casement during his journey into the South American rainforests. He had been sent by the British government to report on atrocities against tribal people while being forced to collect rubber in the Putumayo region in the north-west Amazon. Genocide among the Amazon Indians has continued, but external investigations of this kind have been rare. The way in which Roger Casement carried out his work is still relevant to all kinds of humanitarian and whistle-blowing activities. It is also a key text charting Casement's transition from observer to anti-imperial revolutionary and Irish independence leader, culminating in his execution by the British government in August 1916 after the Easter Rising."

Journey to the fascinating world of the Amazon rainforest as seen through the eyes of the native peoples, artisans, students and tourists. Anacondas, caimans, monkeys, shamans, yucca harvests, river cruises, legends and much more come to life in this amusing yet suspenseful book. Elizabeth Long, an Anthropology professor, and her group of students travel to the Amazon jungle for a study abroad trip. In this bold adventure, they encounter life as never before imagined, living with a tribe on the world’s mightiest river. The voyage takes a sudden turn when the discovery of diamonds in the area leads to a robbery. It is an event that will cause the students’ lives to converge with two elderly British tourists and two local men who work at the diamond mine, weaving them together in a race to recover the diamonds before time runs out. The book unearths the spirit of the Amazon peoples and recreates the beauty of the rainforest - the sights, smells, tastes, sounds, and dangers of this unique place. A riveting chronicle. Most entertaining is the way in which humorous tales, changing attitudes and the straddling of two very different worlds are revealed by following the visitors and natives’ days.

Emily Winslow felt deeply indebted to James Parker when she learned that his wounds resulted from trying to save her brother's life in the trenches of World War I. But by the time she discovered what really happened on that battlefield in France, Emily had fallen for James's charm. Devastated by his betrayal and overwhelmed by feelings of bitterness, Emily throws herself into her writing career. She accepts an assignment to record the life of an isolated tribe of headhunters deep in the Amazon rain forest, believing it will allow her emotions time to heal. But all of her inner turmoil is churned to the surface once again when Ian Marlowe walks into her life. Emily is uncertain whether she can ever trust a man again--or if she can trust her own heart. Mapping The Amazon written by Amanda M. Smith and has been published by Oxford University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2021 with Literary Criticism categories.

An analysis of the political and ecological consequences of charting the Amazon River basin in narrative fiction, Mapping the Amazon examines how widely read novels from twentieth-century South America attempted to map the region for readers. Authors such as Jos Eustasio Rivera, Rmulo Gallegos, Mario Vargas Llosa, Csar Calvo, Mrcio Souza, and Mrio de Andrade traveled to the Amazonian regions of their respective countries and encountered firsthand a forest divided and despoiled by the spatial logic of extractivism. Writing against that logic, they fill their novels with geographic, human, and ecological realities omitted from official accounts of the region. Though the plots unfold after the height of the Amazonian rubber boom (1850-1920), the authors construct landscapes marked by that first large-scale exploitation of Amazonian biodiversity. The material practices of rubber extraction repeat in the stories told about the removal of other plants, seeds, and mineral from the forest as well as its conversion into farmland. The counter-discursive impulse of each novel comes into dialogue with various modernizing projects that carve Amazonia into cultural and economic spaces: border commissions, extractive infrastructure, school geography manuals, Indigenous education programs, and touristic propaganda. Even the novel maps studied have blind spots, though, and Mapping the Amazon considers the legacy of such unintentional omissions today.

A unique, lavishly illustrated e-guide to the beauty and diversity of the Amazon--the rainforest and the river, its flora and fauna, and the people who live in the region. Applying the award-winning DK Eyewitness formula to the subject of the largest and most bio-diverse tract of tropical rainforest in the world, and the vast river that winds its way through it, this title profiles everything from the birds, animals, and insects that live there to the nine South American countries it extends across.
