Electromagnetic scattering from complex objects has been an area of in-depth research for many years. A variety of solution methodologies have been developed and utilised for the solution of ever increasingly complex problems. Among these methodologies, the subject of impedance boundary conditions has interested the authors for some time. In short, impedance boundary conditions allow one to replace a complex structure with an appropriate impedance relationship between the electric and magnetic fields on the surface of the object. This simplifies the solution of the problem considerably, allowing one to ignore the complexity of the internal structure beneath the surface. This book examines impedance boundary conditions in electromagnetics. The introductory chapter provides a presentation of the role of the impedance boundary conditions in solving practical electromagnetic problems and some historical background. One of the main objectives of this book is to present a unified and thorough discussion of this important subject. A method based on a spectral domain approach is presented to derive the Higher Order Impedance Boundary Conditions (HOIBC). The method includes all of the existing approximate boundary conditions, such as the Standard Impedence Boundary Condition, the Tensor Impedence Boundary Condition and the Generalised Impedance Boundary Conditions, as special cases. The special domain approach is applicable to complex coatings and surface treatments as well as simple dielectric coatings. The spectral domain approach is employed to determine the appropriate boundary conditions for planar dielectric coatings, chiral coatings and corregated conductors. The accuracy of the proposal boundary conditions is discussed. The approach is then extended to include the effects of curvature and is applied to curved dielectric and chiral coatings. Numerical data is presented to critically assess the accuracy of the results obtained using various forms of the impedence boundary conditions. A number of appendices that provide more detail on some of the topics addressed in the main body of the book and a selective list of references directly related to the topics addressed in this book are also included.

A comprehensive survey of boundary conditions as applied in antenna and microwave engineering, material physics, optics, and general electromagnetics research. Boundary conditions are essential for determining electromagnetic problems. Working with engineering problems, they provide analytic assistance in mathematical handling of electromagnetic structures, and offer synthetic help for designing new electromagnetic structures. Boundary Conditions in Electromagnetics describes the most-general boundary conditions restricted by linearity and locality, and analyzes basic plane-wave reflection and matching problems associated to a planar boundary in a simple-isotropic medium. This comprehensive text first introduces known special cases of particular familiar forms of boundary conditions — perfect electromagnetic conductor, impedance, and DB boundaries — and then examines various general forms of boundary conditions. Subsequent chapters discuss sesquilinear boundary conditions and practical computations on wave scattering by objects defined by various boundary conditions. The practical applications of less-common boundary conditions, such as for metamaterial and metasurface engineering, are referred to throughout the text. This book: Describes the mathematical analysis of fields associated to given boundary conditions Provides examples of how boundary conditions affect the scattering properties of a particle Contains ample in-chapter exercises and solutions, complete references, and a detailed index Includes appendices containing electromagnetic formulas, Gibbsian 3D dyadics, and four-dimensional formalism Boundary Conditions in Electromagnetics is an authoritative text for electrical engineers and physicists working in electromagnetics research, graduate or post-graduate students studying electromagnetics, and advanced readers interested in electromagnetic theory.

Surface Impedance Boundary Conditions is perhaps the first effort to formalize the concept of SIBC or to extend it to higher orders by providing a comprehensive, consistent, and thorough approach to the subject. The product of nearly 12 years of research on surface impedance, this book takes the mystery out of the largely overlooked SIBC. It provides an understanding that will help practitioners select, use, and develop these efficient modeling tools for their own applications. Use of SIBC has often been viewed as an esoteric issue, and they have been applied in a very limited way, incorporated in computation as an ad hoc means of simplifying the treatment for specific problems. Apply a Surface Impedance "Toolbox" to Develop SIBCs for Any Application The book not only outlines the need for SIBC but also offers a simple, systematic method for constructing SIBC of any order based on a perturbation approach. The formulation of the SIBC within common numerical techniques—such as the boundary integral equations method, the finite element method, and the finite difference method—is discussed in detail and elucidated with specific examples. Since SIBC are often shunned because their implementation usually requires extensive modification of existing software, the authors have mitigated this problem by developing SIBCs, which can be incorporated within existing software without system modification. The authors also present: Conditions of applicability, and errors to be expected from SIBC inclusion Analysis of theoretical arguments and mathematical relationships Well-known numerical techniques and formulations of SIBC A practical set of guidelines for evaluating SIBC feasibility and maximum errors their use will produce A careful mix of theory and practical aspects, this is an excellent tool to help anyone acquire a solid grasp of SIBC and maximize their implementation potential.

A point-matching technique is employed to obtain the electromagnetic fields scattered from a surface whose height profile is periodic. The surface impedance or Leontovich boundary condition is assumed to apply in a local sense. Thus the results are restricted to situations where the lower medium is well conducting (e. g., sea water). It is indicated that the convergence of the computational process is very good in the cases tested thus far.

The inverse scattering problem is central to many areas of science and technology such as radar, sonar, medical imaging, geophysical exploration and nondestructive testing. This book is devoted to the mathematical and numerical analysis of the inverse scattering problem for acoustic and electromagnetic waves. In this fourth edition, a number of significant additions have been made including a new chapter on transmission eigenvalues and a new section on the impedance boundary condition where particular attention has been made to the generalized impedance boundary condition and to nonlocal impedance boundary conditions. Brief discussions on the generalized linear sampling method, the method of recursive linearization, anisotropic media and the use of target signatures in inverse scattering theory have also been added.

The book is devoted to the solution of one general problem of the theory of a three-dimensional quasi-stationary sinusoidal and pulse electromagnetic field. These studies, unlike many well-known works, are based on obtained exact analytical solution of the problem for the field, generated by external current sources near the conducting body with plane surface. The solution for the vector and scalar potentials, electric and magnetic intensities in the dielectric and conducting media is found without restrictions on the configuration of current sources, properties of the media and field frequency. Some general properties of field formation for arbitrary field in the considered system are obtained (in particular, full compensation by the field of the electric charge distributed on the interface between the media, the normal component of the induced external electric field and, accordingly, the equality to zero the components both of the current density and the electric field intensity perpendicular to the interface; the non-uniform electromagnetic field decreases in depth of conducting medium faster than uniform field). It is shown that the exact analytical solution depends on the values of the parameter proportional to the ratio of the field penetration depth to the distance between the external field sources and the body. The concept of strong skin effect is extended to the case of small value of the introduced parameter. A significant simplification of the expressions was obtained as an asymptotic expansion on this small parameter. In the case of pulsed fields approximate method gives the highest accuracy during important initial period of pulse time. For asymptotic expansion the approximate impedance boundary condition is generalized to the diffusion of non-uniform field into conducting medium. The book is intended for the researchers, postgraduate students and students specialized in theory and calculations of electromagnetic fields.
