The history of U.S. imperial expansion at the turn of the twentieth century has often been taught as if it were a major departure from the nation's historical record both before and since. In contrast, Imperial America: U.S. Global Expansion, 1890-1915 shows how the United States' acquisition of overseas colonies after the War of 1898 was actually part of a much longer history of U.S. imperialism. In this curriculum, students explore the historical connections between the United States' creation of a settler colonial empire in North America (what is often called "westward expansion") and the nation's acquisition of an overseas colonial empire following the War of 1898. Students learn about the history of U.S. colonial rule in the territories acquired at the turn of the twentieth century. Students also examine the various ways U.S. imperial power continued to expand in the early twentieth century-even without the acquisition of additional colonies. Resistance to U.S. imperialism is a key theme throughout this curriculum. Excerpt from Imperial America It is a tendency of this as of every age to be carried away by catchwords. Not all our bad intellectual qualities are of modern origin and development; every historical period has had its honourable statesmen and its rascally place -hunters. On the other hand, there is one characteristic peculiar to the present time - namely, that larger numbers of people can now be carried away by catchwords than formerly. Our hitherto inert masses, rural and urban, are moving; and that is the significant fact of modern times. The helots were little stirred by the reasons, chiefly economic, which resulted in Sparta's heading an earlier confederacy than America witnessed ; and the number of Englishmen who were really interested in the Marprelate Controversy was not so large as the historians of sixteenth-century England would make it appear. Patriarchalism, feudalism, the leadership of aristocratic families - these were some of the factors that formerly prevented the masses from becoming prominent. The influence of such factors is now at an end. It may be suspended merely; or it may be extinguished for ever. At all events, we must recognise that it does not at present exist as an active force. Over the past decade, literary scholars have become increasingly engaged with colonial studies and have fashioned various points of focus in their investigations of imperialist narratives, including the figure of woman, cannibalism, the romance of the first encounter, and the tropicopolitan. This book builds on existing work by offering a new focal point: the evolution of the British imperial hero in America from Sir Walter Ralegh's Discoverie of... Guiana (1596) to James Grainger's The Sugar Cane (1764), with concentration on narratives produced between the year of Cromwell's Western Design (1655) and the British raid on Cartegena (1741). Each individual chapter isolates a distinct type of colonial hero, furnishing examples from a wide variety of narratives, including some nonfiction essays and tracts, but chiefly novels, plays, and poems.
