Essay from the year 2014 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Comparative Literature, grade: manque, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (Faculté des lettres), course: Anglais/ Cultural Studies/ Postcolonialism, language: English, abstract: In this paper I analyze the movie Robinson Crusoe to understand the rhetoric of empire building and to stand at instances of appropriation that push the west to cherish superiority over the “other”. I focus on the discursive strategies used by the west to inferiorize the other race and to reduce them to cruel creatures. I start by dwelling on the representation of the “other” and the landscape and I focus on the production of knowledge as a tool used to inferiroize them. At the end I stop at some paradoxes within the colonial discourse that create ruptures in the western empire. I do that by questing signs of resistance that break the discourse of empire building and that reveal the ambivalent nature of the colonial discourse. Keywords: Robinson Crusoe - Colonial Discourse - Empire Building – Orientalism - Film Studies

Chinese Law In Imperial Eyes written by Li Chen and has been published by Columbia University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-22 with History categories.

How did American schoolchildren, French philosophers, Russian Sinologists, Dutch merchants, and British lawyers imagine China and Chinese law? What happened when agents of presumably dominant Western empires had to endure the humiliations and anxieties of maintaining a profitable but precarious relationship with China? In Chinese Law in Imperial Eyes, Li Chen provides a richly textured analysis of these related issues and their intersection with law, culture, and politics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Using a wide array of sources, Chen's study focuses on the power dynamics of Sino-Western relations during the formative century before the First Opium War (1839-1842). He highlights the centrality of law to modern imperial ideology and politics and brings new insight to the origins of comparative Chinese law in the West, the First Opium War, and foreign extraterritoriality in China. The shifting balance of economic and political power formed and transformed knowledge of China and Chinese law in different contact zones. Chen argues that recovering the variegated and contradictory roles of Chinese law in Western "modernization" helps provincialize the subsequent Euro-Americentric discourse of global modernity. Chen draws attention to important yet underanalyzed sites in which imperial sovereignty, national identity, cultural tradition, or international law and order were defined and restructured. His valuable case studies show how constructed differences between societies were hardened into cultural or racial boundaries and then politicized to rationalize international conflicts and hierarchy.

Discourses Of Difference written by Sara Mills and has been published by Routledge this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2003-09-02 with Literary Criticism categories.

Discourses of Difference unravels the complexities of writings by British women travellers of the `high colonial' period. Sara Mills examines the relation of women travellers to colonialism, positioned as they were at the site of conflicting discourses: femininity, feminism, and patriarchal imperialism. Using feminist discourse theory, Sara Mills analyses the writings of three women travellers - Alexandra David-Neel, Mary Kingsley and Nina Mazuchelli. Her examination of agency, identity, and the contemporary social environment, is an important and inspiring step forward in post-colonial cultural and literary theory.

Imperial Eyes is a highly acclaimed and interdisciplinary book which quickly established itself as a seminal work in the study of travel literature and the field of postcolonial criticism. It investigates the way in which travel writing has constructed an image of the world beyond Europe for European readerships. Focusing on writing about South America and Africa in relation to the political and economic expansion of Europe, Mary Louise Pratt uses readings of particular genres of travel writing to show how they connect with the forms of knowledge and expression which surround them. This long-awaited second edition:• is updated throughout, including a new preface and a fully revised introduction;• contains a new chapter, which reads well-known Latin American texts through the concept of neocoloniality, then takes up the expressive coordinates of late twentieth-century experiences of migration and displacement;• upgrades original illustrations and incorporates new visual materials. This new edition of Imperial Eyes continues to advance the study of imperialism, colonialism and travel writing in fresh directions, whilst retaining the clarity necessary to engage readers new to the topic.
