Sensorless control of the synchronous reluctance motor has been a topic of research for more than a decade, producing several successful methods to accomplish this goal. However, a technique that has been overlooked is the full-order nonlinear observer, which is essentially a software model of the motor driven by measurements from the actual motor. Presented in this thesis is the design, implementation, and experimental testing of a full-order observer-based sensorless control technique which requires only the phase current and voltage measurements that are typically available in standard three-phase inverters. A technique is also presented for calculating a table of observer feedback gains parameterized only by the steady-state motor speed. This allows a gain-scheduling observer to be implemented which, as shown using experiments, improves the transient response of the observer over a wide speed range. The sensorless controller consists of a full-order nonlinear observer coupled with an input-output linearization speed controller. The resulting controller was implemented in Simulink and executed on a dSPACE DS1103 real-time DSP board using the Real-Time Workshop extension to Simulink. A custom built three-phase IGBT inverter was used to interface the DSP to a 100 watt synchronous reluctance motor for laboratory testing. The resulting sensorless controller was able to successfully track a varying speed reference from 150 rpm to 1800 rpm with a tracking error under 5% for most of the speed range. At the lowest speeds, the tracking error begins to increase but the observer remains stable down to 150 rpm.

In this thesis, four novel composite controllers, each of which combines a nonlinear feedback controller with a disturbance observer (DO), are proposed for a single-input uncertain nonlinear system with relative degree one for the disturbance attenuation ability improvement and applied to the construction of novel robust field-oriented control (FOC) strategies for the synchronous reluctance motor-based variable speed drive (SynRM-VSD) system and the surface-mounted permanent-magnet synchronous motor-based VSD (SPMSM-VSD) system. The first proposed composite controller is named as the type-1 composite controller, which consists of a standard super-twisting sliding-mode (STSM) controller, a Hermite neural network-based DO (HNN-DO) and an error compensator. Rigorous stability analysis of the sliding-mode dynamics with this composite controller is presented. Based on that, the learning laws for the HNN-DO and the error compensator are rigorously derived. Moreover, the type-1 composite controller is designed as a rotor speed controller for the construction of a novel robust FOC strategy for the SynRM-VSD system, where two composite current controllers, each of which is composed of two standard STSM controllers, are adopted. Comparative hardware-in-the-loop tests are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of the proposed FOC strategy. The second proposed composite controller is named as the type-2 composite controller, which consists of a modified STSM controller and a second-order extended state observer. Rigorous stability analysis of the sliding-mode dynamics with this composite controller is presented. Furthermore, the type-2 composite controller is designed as a rotor speed controller for the construction of a novel robust FOC strategy for the SPMSM-VSD system, where two linear proportional-integral (PI) current controllers are adopted. Comparative experimental tests are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of such a FOC strategy. The third proposed composite controller is named as the type-3 composite controller, which consists of a sign-function-based complementary sliding-mode controller and a super-twisting sliding-mode observer (STSMO). Rigorous stability analysis of the tracking error dynamics with this composite controller is presented. Moreover, the type-3 composite controller is designed as a rotor speed controller for the construction of a novel robust FOC strategy for the SPMSM-VSD system, where two linear PI current controllers are adopted. Comparative experimental tests are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and the superiority of such a FOC strategy. The fourth proposed composite controller is named as the type-4 composite controller, which consists of a classic model reference adaptive controller, a STSMO and an error compensator. A stable first-order linear model is selected as the reference model for the system. Rigorous stability analysis of the tracking error dynamics with this composite controller is presented. Furthermore, the type-4 composite controller is designed as a rotor speed controller for the construction of a novel robust FOC strategy for the SPMSM-VSD system, where two linear PI current controllers are adopted. Comparative experimental tests are performed to demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of such a FOC strategy.

This book offers an essential compendium on the analysis and design of synchronous motors for variable-speed applications. Focusing on synchronous reluctance and ferrite permanent-magnet (PM) synchronous reluctance machines, it provides a broad perspective on three-phase machines for variable speed applications, a field currently dominated by asynchronous machines and rare-earth PM synchronous machines. It also describes synchronous reluctance machines and PM machines without rare-earth materials, comparing them to state-of-the-art solutions. The book provides readers with extensive information on and finite element models of PM synchronous machines, including all relevant equations and with an emphasis on synchronous-reluctance and PM-assisted synchronous-reluctance machines. It covers ferrite-assisted machines, modeled as a subcase of PM-assistance, fractional slot combinations solutions, and a quantitative, normalized comparison of torque capability with benchmark PM machines. The book discusses a wealth of techniques for identifying machine parameters, with an emphasis on self-commissioning algorithms, and presents methods for automated machine design and optimization, including a software tool developed for this purpose. Addressing an important gap in the field of PM-less and less-PM electrical machines, it is intended as a self-contained reference guide for both graduate students and professional machine designers, and as a useful text for university courses on automated and/or optimized design of electrical machines and drives.

A unique approach to sensorless control and regulator design of electric drives Based on the author's vast industry experience and collaborative works with other industries, Control of Electric Machine Drive Systems is packed with tested, implemented, and verified ideas that engineers can apply to everyday problems in the field. Originally published in Korean as a textbook, this highly practical updated version features the latest information on the control of electric machines and apparatus, as well as a new chapter on sensorless control of AC machines, a topic not covered in any other publication. The book begins by explaining the features of the electric drive system and trends of development in related technologies, as well as the basic structure and operation principles of the electric machine. It also addresses steady state characteristics and control of the machines and the transformation of physical variables of AC machines using reference frame theory in order to provide a proper foundation for the material. The heart of the book reviews several control algorithms of electric machines and power converters, explaining active damping and how to regulate current, speed, and position in a feedback manner. Seung-Ki Sul introduces tricks to enhance the control performance of the electric machines, and the algorithm to detect the phase angle of an AC source and to control DC link voltages of power converters. Topics also covered are: Vector control Control algorithms for position/speed sensorless drive of AC machines Methods for identifying the parameters of electric machines and power converters The matrix algebra to model a three-phase AC machine in d-q-n axes Every chapter features exercise problems drawn from actual industry experience. The book also includes more than 300 figures and offers access to an FTP site, which provides MATLAB programs for selected problems. The book's practicality and realworld relatability make it an invaluable resource for professionals and engineers involved in the research and development of electric machine drive business, industrial drive designers, and senior undergraduate and graduate students. Permanent magnet synchronous (PMS) motors stand at the forefront of electric motor development due to their energy saving capabilities and performance potential. The motors have been developed in response to mounting environmental crises and growing electricity prices, and they have enabled the emergence of motor drive applications like those found in electric and hybrid vehicles, fly by wire, and drones. Control of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors is a timely advancement along that path as the first comprehensive, self-contained, and thoroughly up-to-date book devoted solely to the control of PMS motors. It offers a deep and extended analysis, design, implementation, and performance evaluation of major motor control methods, including Vector, Direct Torque, Predictive, Deadbeat, and Combined Control, in a systematic and coherent manner. All major Sensorless Control and Parameter Estimation methods are also studied. The book places great emphasis on energy saving control schemes.
